Football: Chelsea not in Premier League title race, says Sarri

LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri has downplayed Pep Guardiola's suggestion that Chelsea are still in the Premier League title race as he prepares his team to face leaders Manchester City on Sunday.
The 60-year-old Italian said his side were "lucky" to beat City in December when they ended the champions' 21-match unbeaten run with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
But Sarri said his fourth-placed team are not in the title picture, even though Guardiola said Tottenham, Chelsea or even fifth-placed Manchester United could not be ruled out.
City lead the table on goal difference from Liverpool, with both sides 12 points clear of Chelsea.
"I think we will be able to fight for the top four this season. No more, I think," Sarri said at his pre-match press conference on Friday (Feb 8) ahead of the trip to the Etihad Stadium.
"We can win something of course, but in the Premier League there is a fight between Liverpool and Man City. At the moment Man City is the best team in Europe."
Sarri was also asked again about Eden Hazard, saying he wanted the Belgium forward to be "happy" wherever his future lies as speculation continues to swirl over a potential move.
Hazard this week admitted to having made a decision on his future, with his Chelsea contract expiring in June 2020 and amid repeated links with a move to Real Madrid.
"I speak every day with Eden, but I speak with Eden about his position on the pitch," said Sarri.
"I will be really very happy with him if he will want to stay because in my opinion he's the best in Europe.
"But it's up to him, I think. I want to see him happy. And so, he has to decide."
Sarri has previously suggested he does not expect Hazard's decision to be known until the end of the season.
The Chelsea boss and Guardiola share a mutual admiration for their similar playing styles, but Sarri said they tend to pick former AC Milan boss Arrigo Sacchi's brains when they meet socially rather than sharing their own secrets.
"We have a good relationship. Very, very good," Sarri said.
"Usually during the summer we have dinner together. I hope he speaks very well about me as a coach, as a friend.
"Usually we learn from Arrigo Sacchi. Because Arrigo is always with us. So it's very interesting to speak to Arrigo."

LONDON â€¢ Manchester City, branding themselves as "The Fourmidables", celebrated their domestic treble with an open-top bus parade on Monday, drawing an estimated 100,000 fans to the streets of the city centre.
Pep Guardiola's City became the first side to complete a clean sweep of all three major English trophies with last Saturday's 6-0 thrashing of Watford in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
They had clinched a second successive Premier League title the previous week and also won the League Cup in February.
It was the fourth time in seven years the club had taken over the city centre for a celebratory parade.
Adding the Community Shield to the tally, the club showed off their trophies and had banners with the words "The Fourmidables".
The victorious squad were joined by members of the City women's team, who also won an FA Cup and League Cup double this year.
Manager Guardiola insisted he has not thought about next season, but admitted Vincent Kompany will be missed after the captain confirmed his departure to become player-manager at Anderlecht.

The Belgian now expects the club to go on and achieve even greater success. "This team are ready to achieve so much more," he said.

He ended his speech by declaring City were the "best club in the world" regardless of European success: "I do not care if you win the Champions League or not, you are the best club in the world."
Organisers said the crowd for the parade, which culminated with the stage show outside Manchester Cathedral, was estimated to be around 100,000.
Before the parade, a video had emerged online of the league trophy being smashed to pieces at City's training ground, as players Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne looked on from a balcony above.
The video indicated that the trophy was dropped but the incident turned out to be just an elaborate prank for City's in-house City TV, as confirmed by Sky Sports.

MADRID (AFP) - Ex-Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has avoided jail for tax fraud as part of a deal with Spanish prosecutors revealed Tuesday (Feb 5) but will pay a fine of close to two million euros.Â
The 56-year-old is accused of committing tax fraud in 2011 and 2012 when he coached Spanish giants Real Madrid.
According to the agreement seen by AFP, Mourinho accepted a one-year jail sentence immediately commuted to a fine of 182,500 euros (S$281,908).Â

LONDON â€¢ Raheem Sterling has admitted the "pressure got to him" and his teammates during Liverpool's failed English Premier League title tilt in the 2013-14 season, but there was no chance of a repeat at Manchester City as they have "the belief".
The former Reds forward was part of a team that topped the table with three games to go five years ago, but slipped up to enable City to win the league by two points.
Recalling his time at Anfield, Sterling told Sky Sports: "When I was there (at Liverpool), I did feel a lot more pressure than when I'm here, with match days and the fans.
"We were in control and we had the opportunity to see it through, but we didn't do that.
"Here, we're completely focused on each game and trying to win each game as it comes.
"It's a completely different scenario from last year... we were a bit more comfortable towards this point of the season."

RAHEEM STERLING, on City playing second fiddle to the Reds compared to last year, when they had a massive lead over their challengers.

He added: "They've been playing some good football at times but we're confident in ourselves.

City can provisionally move top if they avoid defeat at Bournemouth today, with the Merseyside derby taking place tomorrow.
However, Pep Guardiola knows that anything other than a victory would be a massive blow to their hopes of back-to-back league titles for the first time in their history.
The Spaniard has concerns over fatigue affecting his squad, who remain in the hunt for an unprecedented quadruple. And, with Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte missing for the next few weeks, he will have to tinker with his line-up at Dean Court.
The City boss said: "Hypothetically, we have 20 games left in the season - 10 Premier League games and if we get to the Cup finals - and if you think we are only going to play with Bernardo (Silva) and Raheem, that's not going to happen.
"They (the squad players) know what they have to do, train hard, compete hard, they are going to play minutes.
"Everybody has to make their contribution then, (and) when I see their performance, I'm going to take decisions."

Asked about the scuffle, the German coach blasted: "I don't like it. You can't do that, you just can't do that. It's not easy to go up the steps after a defeat. It's very difficult for me, for everybody, but we have to accept it.
"If we lose, we have to show respect. You can't get into a fight with a spectator."
Media back home, including daily Folha and website Terra, also took on a similar tone, branding the Brazil international a "coward" and "rebellious adolescent" and "appears incapable of dealing with criticism, of dealing with frustrations".

Difficult match for both but Chelsea must not lose: Sarri

LONDON â€¢ Chelsea cannot afford to lose at Manchester United tomorrow in what will be a "difficult match" for both teams looking to finish in the Premier League's top four, Maurizio Sarri said at his pre-match press conference.
He told reporters yesterday: "We have two very important targets at the end of our season.
"The first is the top four and the second is to get to the final of the Europa League.
"For the first target, this match is more than important for us and for our opponents. So we will try to win, of course, but we (just) need not to lose."
Fourth-placed Chelsea are three points above United, who are in sixth, with only three games left, and Sarri's men also have a lifeline via the Europa League as they can qualify for the Champions League if they win the tournament.
However, the Blues have yet to win a single point away at a Big Six club this season, losing four games, conceding 13 goals and scoring only one.

BRACED FOR REBOUND
In the second half of the season, we face the big teams away, only Tottenham at home. It's not easy. We have to play against opponents with a very high level of motivation after the Manchester derby. But we haveÂ to try.

They are also facing a United side hurting from a 2-0 midweek humbling at the hands of cross-town rivals Manchester City, and Sarri bemoaned their fixture list, which has been less than kind to them.
The Italian, who also confirmed winger Callum Hudson-Odoi would be out for at least three months with a ruptured Achilles tendon, while midfielder N'Golo Kante was a doubt, said: "In the second half of the season, we face the big teams away, only Tottenham at home.
"It's not easy. We have to play against opponents with a very high level of motivation after the Manchester derby. But we have to try."
Sarri, who was fined Â£8,000 (S$14,067) by the Football Association on Thursday after accepting a misconduct charge arising from their 2-2 Premier League draw against Burnley earlier in the week, also felt Eden Hazard should have been named in the Professional Footballers' Association's (PFA) Team of the Year.
No player has been involved in more goals than the Belgium forward, who is on the six-man shortlist for the PFA Player of the Year award, in the league this term (16 goals and 13 assists) and Sarri is of the opinion that their league position is the reason behind the snub.
He added: "Eden deserved to be in the top 11 of the Premier League. But, at the moment, the table is clear. There is City, there is Liverpool... so the vote was influenced by the table."

After their stunning comeback against Sevilla in midweek, Barca looked destined to again finish the job, but Valencia held on for a point after a breathless contest at the Camp Nou.
Messi's 20th and 21st league goals of the season left Barca six points clear of Atletico Madrid, who could cut the gap to three by beating Real Betis on Sunday, with Real Madrid, 11 points back, at home to Alaves.
After eight consecutive Barcelona wins in La Liga, this result perhaps offered the chasing pack a little encouragement at the start of a testing month for the Catalans.
Real could inflict further disruption themselves. They play Barca in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals on Wednesday, in what will be the first of three Clasicos in a month. The latter two will be back-to-back, within four days.
But with Messi in this sort of form, any confidence from Real comes with an asterisk.

Valencia's penalty was clear after Sergi shoved Daniel Wass in the back, with Parejo whipping the ball into the corner to make it two.
Barca looked shell-shocked but the third goal in 15 minutes was theirs. Semedo beat Toni Lato to Arturo Vidal's pass and tumbled after a clip on his shin. Messi slammed the loose ball into the top corner but the whistle had blown. He rolled in the penalty instead.
Sergi's shot crashed against the post and Barca were dominant after half-time. Messi and Carles Alena had shots saved, and Messi headed over.
At the other end, on a rare Valencia break, Rodrigo should have made it three but, on the stretch, put it over from six yards.
That was in the 63rd minute, and in the 64th, Barcelona were level. Vidal teed up Messi, who teed up his own left foot and curled the ball inside the post.
The teams, and the crowd, seemed to take a breath, in anticipation of a late push, but it never came. The draw was a fair result.
