Reds bounce back from early setback

Reds bounce back from early setback

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Liverpool 4
Burnley 2
LONDON • It would be too simplistic to say Liverpool responded to the test of nerve set by Manchester City.
Jurgen Klopp's team have been doing that since the first day of this enthralling Premier League season.
This was a test of nerve set by Burnley, the match officials and the elements, and they delivered on all counts to return the gap in the title race to one point yesterday.
Liverpool fell behind to a controversial early goal, but ultimately ran out comfortable 4-2 victors, thanks to a brace apiece from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
They were also indebted to consistently poor defending from Sean Dyche's team, who remain too close to the relegation zone for their own liking despite causing the title contenders problems all afternoon at a wet and windy Anfield.
The challenge for Klopp's men began before Anfield had properly roused itself for the kick-off.
Ashley Westwood swung a corner into a packed penalty box and directly into Liverpool's net.

KEEPING PACE WITH CITY
At 3-1 up, all the balls Burnley got were from us. I'm completely happy with the performance, especially against Burnley. Nobody gets rid of us.
JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, on his team's come-from-behind victory after Burnley's controversial opening goal.

The small pocket of Burnley supporters erupted and so did Alisson, who was unable to leap, having been sandwiched between Jack Cork and James Tarkowski. The Reds waited for referee Andre Marriner to penalise a clear foul, but he instead sent the Brazil goalkeeper into the notebook for dissent.
It was a bad call against Klopp's team although it gave them 84 minutes to channel their grievance in the most appropriate way.
Burnley helped them along the way with several defensive lapses that squandered the major decision in their favour, with Tom Heaton the chief culprit on an afternoon to forget for the England goalkeeper.
The hosts levelled when he failed to intercept Mohamed Salah's low cross and Firmino gratefully converted the gift at close range for his 10th league goal of the campaign.
Klopp's men benefited from another error to edge ahead, with Jeff Hendrick the culprit this time.
He played Phil Bardsley into trouble and Adam Lallana blocked the full-back's clearance, diverting it to Salah inside the box. The ball then broke for Mane, who curled a fine finish to overturn Burnley's controversial advantage.
Lallana's inclusion ahead of Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita was met with scepticism before the start of the game, but he provided the creativity that Liverpool's midfield has lacked in recent away fixtures.
It was his ball to Salah, who failed to score for the fifth consecutive game, that enabled the latter to subsequently cross for Firmino's equaliser and his challenge on Bardsley was also a key moment.
The cushion of a third goal came in the second half courtesy of another mistake from Heaton after his weak kick found Salah, who raced through on goal only to be halted by Charlie Taylor's precise tackle.
The left-back, however, could only steer the ball to Firmino, who prodded home his second.
It could have been a nervous finale when substitute Johann Berg Gudmundsson netted, but the Clarets' hopes of a dramatic recovery were dashed when substitute Daniel Sturridge released Mane to stroke home in added time.
Klopp felt his surprise decision to name Lallana in his line-up was vindicated as he "played a really good game" before insisting that Burnley's opener should not have stood.
The German said: "The first goal in a lot of countries would have been disallowed.
"That never helps, but it was early so that's good. We kept as calm as possible, we forced the goals with two brilliant moments of football and defended with passion.
"When it was 3-1, we did not finish it off and it was not cool. But then, we score a fourth and it's all good."

Football: Arsenal boss Emery hints at potential departures, concedes Chelsea 'deserved to win' Europa League final

BAKU (REUTERS) - Some players may need to leave Arsenal as he continues his bid to rebuild the squad, said manager Unai Emery after his men were thrashed 4-1 by Chelsea in the Europa League final on Wednesday (May 29).
Second-half goals from Olivier Giroud, Pedro and a double from Eden Hazard ensured Arsenal failed to win their fourth successive European final.
Emery said his team, who finished fifth in the Premier League, were still very much in a "process" and he would evaluate his options over the summer.
"We need to speak with the club, speak with the players, and do one step more in our way," he said.
"But our idea is to continue carrying on improving with the young players who arrived last year.
"Maybe some players need to leave, to take a new way. We are closer to the other teams. At the moment it's not enough, but we can continue with the same team next year.
"Other players will come in and help us get better in our capacity."

The defeat means Arsenal failed to earn a spot in next season's Champions League for the third successive season, but Emery said another Europa League campaign would not put off potential targets joining the club.
"I think Arsenal is a big name in the football world, and a lot of players want to play here," he added.
"The transfers, I don't know for next year. But the club is working to improve and to take all we need to go our way.
"Also we have a lot of players with the possibility to improve."
Emery, however, conceded that Chelsea had deserved the victory.
"We tried to stay in the match but their second goal made it difficult for us," he added. "It was going better for them and when we wanted to do something, we couldn't find what we needed to score. They deserved to win."

Afghanistan FF staff promised women players spots on team in exchange for sex

KABUL • Representing Afghanistan internationally should have been the highlight of Khalida Popal's career as a professional footballer, but life in the strife-torn country is never that simple.
It has been seven years since she was forced to leave her family and her homeland, terrified for her life and personal safety, after pioneering women's football in a country that has been described as one of the most dangerous places to be female.
She has paid a high price for becoming the face of the Afghanistan women's football team, with death threats forcing her to spend a year in an asylum centre before being granted permission to live in Denmark in 2012.
But Popal remains a local girl at heart, and despite having since suffered a career-ending knee injury, she has continued to organise training sessions for the team in other countries including Jordan, Japan and the United Arab Emirates.
These camps have brought together players from inside and outside Afghanistan, and the bonds forged have compelled Popal to speak out about the ordeal of Afghan women players and her frustrations with a system that has failed to protect them.
Last Sunday, the country's attorney general suspended Keramuddin Keram, the head of the Afghan Football Federation (AFF), and four others after a probe into allegations of sexual abuse of members of the women's national football team.
According to the attorney general's office, they are:
• The AFF's deputy president, Yosuf Kargar
• Its general secretary, Sayed Alireza Aghazada
• A coach in charge of goalkeepers, Abdul Saboor Walizada
• An official in charge of liaison with provincial football teams, Nadir Alimi
While the investigation is still ongoing, Fifa has provisionally banned Keram from all football-related activities for 90 days "pending proceedings".
His name brings back harrowing memories for Popal. In a telephone interview with the New York Times, she claimed "the president of AFF and some trainers are raping and sexually harassing female players".
The 31-year-old also revealed to The Guardian the purported transgressions were as recent as February, when the players flew to Jordan from Afghanistan while being accompanied by two men.
"They (the AFF) sent two male representatives, going under the title of 'head of women's football' and 'assistant coach'," she said.
"They were bullying and harassing the girls, particularly the ones from Afghanistan because they knew they wouldn't speak up. I confronted them, told them they can't do that and I'd make a complaint.
"It continued. These guys were calling on the rooms of the players and sleeping with the girls. AFF staff members would say to girls that they could get them on the team list and would pay them £100 (S$173) a month if they would say yes to everything.
"They were pushing and forcing the girls. Coercing them."
When the players threatened to complain, Keram, who wields considerable political influence as a former governor of Panjshir Province, allegedly beat one of them with a snooker cue, and threw her and eight other women off the team, labelling them "lesbians".
After learning that the nine players had been sidelined, she went on to do her own investigation, only to find out the "huge extent of the abuse".
Popal added: "He (Keram) has a room inside his office that is a bedroom with a bed. The doors of his office (have) fingerprint recognition, so when players go in, they can't get out without his fingerprint.
"I found some of the girls were sexually abused, and physically abused if they said no. The federation would make an excuse to get rid of the player so that if they came out (and spoke publicly), it would look like they were just upset about being kicked off the team."
American Kelly Lindsey, the former national coach, corroborated Popal's account, saying the two male officials that were involved in the Jordan case had been "promoted and moved to other areas in the AFF".
The federation has, however, denied the allegations, calling them "groundless", while insisting it had "a zero-tolerance policy towards any type of such behaviour".
