Football: Pep Guardiola sorry to have derailed Manuel Pellegrini's final days at Man City

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Pep Guardiola has apologised if the early announcement of his arrival at Manchester City in 2016 destabilised his predecessor Manuel Pellegrini's attempt to win the quadruple.
Pellegrini will bring his West Ham side to Manchester on Wednesday (Feb 27), making his first visit to the Etihad for a match since City sacked him to make space for Guardiola.
The Chilean confirmed in February 2016, three months before his departure, that he was being replaced, and City, who were still in contention to win four trophies at that point, picked up only seven points from the seven league matches that followed.
They did win the League Cup that season, and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, but needed a draw at Swansea on the final day of the campaign to secure fourth place.
Pellegrini acknowledged in May 2016 that his decision to announce his departure contributed to City's subsequent loss of form, saying that "something was broken in that moment".
Guardiola, who joined City from Bayern Munich, said he was unaware that his impending arrival caused such instability.
"I don't know. He can answer that. I was in Munich, so I don't know what happened in the locker room and what the reason why is," he said.
"But if it was the reason - I think nobody can know it - I'm sorry and I apologise. Everybody was honest to tell Manuel what was happening, but really it's a question for Manuel."
Pellegrini won the Premier League and the League Cup in the first of his three seasons at City, and his role in the club's rise was acknowledged by Guardiola.
"Of course, all the players I have in my hands now were with other managers and they learned a lot from that - and I benefit from that.
"In the past decade, they were involved with (Roberto) Mancini and Manuel and myself, with all the staff and all the players, we have created Manchester City.
"I didn't build it. I didn't create it. Many incredible players and managers, everybody, did something.
"I hope we can leave something for the next manager to do that. That's the best we can do for other managers, leave something for the club - and, of course, I got something with what Manuel did here."
One of the most important signings City made under Pellegrini was Raheem Sterling, who scored the decisive kick as Chelsea were beaten in a penalty shoot-out in Sunday's League Cup final.
Sterling has scored 15 goals this season, including the 90th-minute winner in the 3-2 Champions League last-16 first-leg win over Schalke on Feb 20.
And Guardiola was impressed by the 24-year-old's bravery to take the deciding spot-kick against Chelsea.
"I cannot anticipate how far his career will go. But I admire the fact that, in Sunday's situation, he took responsibility," he said.
"The fact he said he wanted to hit the last penalty or even the first one, or take that responsibility, that means a lot.
"Of course, he helps us a lot, but he will retire and say: 'I took responsibility and I was brave with courage in the big moments'.
"These kinds of players are judged on these kinds of actions. In basketball, the last seconds, who is the taker in the last action? That makes the difference.
"The penalty in the final of the World Cup, who's the taker? So that is what makes the difference - to have the feeling that, when everyone has doubts, says: 'I am going to do that'. That is massive."

LONDON (AFP) -Â Manchester City retained the League Cup by edging Chelsea 4-3 on penalties on Sunday (Feb 24) after an incredible bust-up between Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.Â
The Italian tried to replace the worldâ€™s most expensive keeperÂ towards the end of a cagey 120 minutes that ended 0-0.Â
Kepa had received treatment for an injury in the final stages, but also has an inferior record of saving spot-kicks than Willy Caballero, who Sarri attempted to introduce.Â
City goalkeeper Ederson denied Jorginho and David Luiz hit the post in the shootout before Raheem Sterling smashed the winning penalty past Kepa.Â Until that flashpoint, the afternoon had been a success for Sarri just two weeks on from Chelseaâ€™s worst defeat since 1991 in a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of City in the Premier League.Â
The chances of Sarri losing his job were only heightened by a FA Cup elimination at the hands of Manchester United on Monday.Â With his back to the wall, it was perhaps understandable then that Sarri adopted a far more cautious approach.Â
Gonzalo Higuain was dropped to the bench to leave Eden Hazard to plough a lone furrow up front â€“ as the Belgian did when Chelsea beat City 2-0 in December.Â Sarri is an open admirer of City boss Pep Guardiolaâ€™s work, but accepted his sideâ€™s limitations by gifting City possession and being far harder to break down than in recent weeks.Â

City were dealt an injury blow as Vincent Kompany had to replace Aymeric Laporte at half-time, and Hazard routinely exposed his Belgian international teammateâ€™s lack of pace after the break.Â
Chelsea had an anxious wait just before the hour mark for VAR to confirm Aguero was offside after he found the net, but most of the second half action came at the other end.Â Sarriâ€™s gameplan nearly worked perfectly 24 minutes from time when Hazard let Kompany trailing and crossed for Nâ€™Golo Kante, but the French World Cup winner couldnâ€™t keep his shot under the bar.Â
Ross Barkley then curled just off target as Chelsea grew in confidence before more Hazard magic opened up City again only for Pedro Rodriguezâ€™s cross to be cut out when the Spaniard should have gone for goal.Â Only the finest of margins denied Hazard once more in stoppage time as he raced clear on goal only to see the offside flag go up to Sarriâ€™s dismay.Â
An extra 30 minutes also failed to muster a goal with City regaining a semblance of control.Â A combination of Cesar Azpilicueta and Kepa prevented Aguero turning home Sterlingâ€™s cross from point-blank range.Â
Aguero had one final chance to win it three minutes from time, but Kepa made his best save of the game low to his left before refusing to make way for Caballero.Â
A visibly furious Sarri even started making his way towards the tunnel before turning back to take his place on the touchline.Â Arrizabalaga did save Leroy Saneâ€™s spot-kick, but should have done better when Agueroâ€™s penalty slipped underneath his body.Â
Ilkay Gundogan also found the net for City before Sterling sealed the start of a potential quadruple of trophies this season by drilling his penalty in off the underside of the bar.

A painful lesson for sloppy Spurs

LONDON â€¢ Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said he was living the dream in the build-up to their Champions League semi-final against Ajax, but it must have felt like a nightmare at times against the classy Dutch side on Tuesday.
Borrowing a line from the Disney cartoon hero Buzz Lightyear when he urged his players to go "to infinity and beyond", Spurs were instead sent crashing down to earth after being comprehensively outplayed in the first 30 minutes.
They were fortunate to only concede a 15th-minute Donny van de Beek goal that gave the visitors a precious 1-0 away win.
Pochettino took his share of the blame for a "sloppy" display after admitting he used the wrong tactics.
Ajax dominated the first half until he completely changed his game plan by switching from a 3-5-2 formation to a 4-4-2 system.
Tactics aside, the Spurs boss was also angry with the lethargic way his players started the club's first European Cup semi-final in 57 years.
"The attitude was there, but we didn't find a way to play," he said.
"We didn't show the energy that we wanted to show. They showed more energy than us. The way we conceded the goal was painful.
"Our approach to the game was not good. I am the manager so I have responsibility. I can accept it was a mistake the shape we used. But our lack of energy from the beginning made our game difficult."
With Harry Kane and Son Heung-min unavailable through injury and suspension respectively, Spurs were blunt in attack and they also lacked creativity in midfield.
Aided by the introduction of Moussa Sissoko for the injured Jan Vertonghen just after the half-hour mark, Tottenham regained a measure of control but could not hurt Ajax with their long-ball barrage.

MAURICIO POCHETTINO, Tottenham manager, remains positive that his side can overturn the 1-0 first-leg deficit and reach the Champions League final.

Vertonghen, one of three centre-backs deployed by Pochettino, had to be substituted after a collision with teammate Toby Alderweireld left him with a bloody nose.
Pochettino was also asked to clarify the situation in which Vertonghen needed lengthy treatment and was given the all-clear by Spurs medics to continue playing, before the clearly-groggy Belgian was then helped off the field as it became clear he could not continue.
Spurs said he had passed all the on-field concussion tests, as per protocol - in other words, he had not suffered a concussion.
"The rules and the protocol were there and the medical staff followed them," Pochettino said.
"In the next action, we had to take him out. The most important thing is the health of the player. I only need to listen and hear what they say and take a decision. I will never debate their decision."
Ajax, who were sharper in mind and body, seized a deserved lead when Frenkie de Jong, David Neres, Lasse Schone, Hakim Ziyech and van de Beek tore Spurs apart.
Found by Neres, Schone instantly worked the ball across to Ziyech, who placed the ball between Vertonghen and Danny Rose for van de Beek.
A master at movement between the lines, van de Beek timed his run to perfection and demonstrated a masterclass in composure and technique with his finish.
Despite an improved second-half display, Spurs managed only one effort on target.
But Pochettino remains hopeful that his side can turn things around.
"We pushed them to play deeper (in the second half). We started to press in the way we wanted to press. The second half has given us the hope for the second leg," he said. "We are alive. It's only 1-0 down. We need to believe we can go there and win the game."

Wounded by fatigue and injuries to key attacking players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli, Spurs will at least have Moura to provide some firepower up front.
The 26-year-old returned to the starting line-up against Palace on Sunday after a knee problem.
Forward Son Heung-min is also back earlier than expected after South Korea's Asian Cup quarter-final exit to Qatar, although he may not be ready to feature today after missing three games.
"He's so tired, he played three games. Very tough games," Pochettino said. "We hope he'll be available and ready on Wednesday to help the team."
