City in FA Cup final but Pep still insists quadruple not on

LONDON • Pep Guardiola has once again sought to play down Manchester City's chances of winning the quadruple after their narrow 1-0 FA Cup semi-final victory over Brighton on Saturday.
Describing the unprecedented feat as highly unlikely, Gabriel Jesus' goal in the fourth minute was enough for City to set up a return visit to Wembley for the final on May 18.
They will be firm favourites to triumph and claim another piece of silverware, having won the League Cup in February.
Guardiola's men also remain in contention to retain the Premier League title and win the Champions League for the first time - with a quarter-final first leg against Tottenham to come tomorrow.
Should they prevail in the three competitions, they would become the first English club to achieve such a clean sweep.
But, after an unexpectedly subdued showing in what was City's 11th victory in 14 FA Cup semi-finals, and one in which they were somewhat fortunate not to lose Kyle Walker to a first-half red card for an apparent headbutt, Guardiola maintained his stance of not getting carried away with regard to what his team can achieve.
The Spaniard said post-game: "It is almost impossible to win the quadruple. Put it in the headline: almost impossible. Surviving in that stage of the competitions is already a miracle. And still we are there."
The 48-year-old was in somewhat tetchy mood after what was a 22nd victory in 23 games for his side, which could in part have been down to how City performed at Wembley.
Jesus' goal appeared the cue for a rout. Yet as was the case in the recent wins against Fulham and Cardiff, City retreated within themselves after taking an early lead.
They created only four shots on target in the entire game and found themselves under pressure from a spirited Brighton side in the second half.
It could also have been a different game had Walker been sent off in the first half following a scuffle with Brighton winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh. Both players were booked by referee Anthony Taylor before the defender's yellow card was looked at by the Video Assistant Referee with the possibility of it being upgraded.
After a short delay, the original decision was upheld despite replays showing Walker had thrust his head into that of the Iranian.
While Guardiola claimed to have not seen the incident, Chris Hughton was in no doubt the England right-back was lucky to remain on the field.
"In my opinion, it was a red card. There was sufficient force," said the Brighton manager. "We're at a stage where everybody is pushing for it (VAR). I've been converted, but I'm not sure how far it will take us."

Football: Arsenal's Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech to retire at end of English Premier League season

LONDON (REUTERS) - Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech announced on Tuesday (Jan 15) his retirement at the end of the English Premier League season after 20 years as a professional and winning everything in club football.
One of the world's great goalkeepers, the 36-year-old joined the Gunners from London rivals Chelsea in 2015 and holds several Premier League records, including the most clean sheets (202 in 443 appearances).
"It has been 20 years since I signed my first professional contract, so it feels like the right time to announce that I will retire at the end of this season," the Czech said on Twitter.
"Having played 15 years in the Premier League, and won every single trophy possible, I feel like I have achieved everything I set out to achieve," he added.
"I will continue to work hard at Arsenal to hopefully win one more trophy this season, then I am looking forward to seeing what life holds for me off the pitch."
Cech started the season as Arsenal manager Unai Emery's first choice but lost out to new signing Bernd Leno after he suffered a hamstring injury in September.
The four-time Premier League Golden Glove winner has been restricted to Cup appearances since his return.
Cech joined Chelsea from French side Rennes in July 2004 and helped them win four Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, the Uefa Champions League and Europa League.
He also suffered a fractured skull while playing against Reading in 2006, leading to the tall Czech wearing protective headgear.
With Arsenal, Cech has won another FA Cup and two Community Shields.
Cech kept a total of 228 clean sheets with Chelsea in all competitions, before he fell behind Thibaut Courtois in the pecking order.
He still holds the Premier League record for most clean sheets in a season (24) and went 1,024 minutes without conceding in 2004-05, a benchmark that has since been surpassed. He was capped 124 times by his country and played in the 2006 World Cup.
The North Londoners are fifth in the Premier League, ahead of United on goal difference but 16 points adrift of leaders Liverpool.
Arsenal remain in contention for the FA Cup, although they host in-form Manchester United in the fourth round on Jan 25, and the Europa League.
"For your consummate professionalism, for being the perfect role model, for the 50 clean sheets, for your honesty, your integrity and for your inspiring work with @AFC-Foundation, we want to say... thank you @PetrCech," Arsenal said on Twitter.

Chelsea also paid tribute to their former goalkeeper, tweeting: "There's only 1 @PetrCech! Thanks for the memories! A champion on and off the pitch. Enjoy your retirement, @PetrCech!"

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright tweeted: "All the best Petr. Enjoy the rest of the season and all the best for your retirement. It has been a pleasure watching you play."
Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster said that Cech was "one of my all time favourites".
"You'll be missed Petr," he tweeted.

Football: Son back as Tottenham target comeback in Ajax semi-final

AMSTERDAM (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino describes being in the last four of the Champions League as "a bonus", but Tottenham Hotspur are still hopeful of going all the way to the final as Son Heung-min returns for Wednesday's second leg against Ajax.
Spurs come to Amsterdam needing a special performance if they are to reach the final of this competition for the first time in their history after a Donny van de Beek away goal condemned them to a 1-0 defeat in London last week.
However, Pochettino's team have already made history for the club by getting this far - they last reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1962 before being beaten by Eusebio's Benfica.
Now they are dreaming of a first European final since Keith Burkinshaw's team beat Anderlecht on penalties to lift the UEFA Cup in 1984, before any of those set to feature on Wednesday were born.
"We are living a dream. Five years ago when we arrived it was to reduce the gap to the top four, and then to have the possibility to play in the Champions League," Pochettino said at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Tuesday (May 7).
"I think nobody would believe we would be playing in the Champions League three seasons in a row and competing at this stage."

STUMBLING

However, his side are stumbling badly towards the finish line with a depleted squad, set to finish in the top four in the Premier League mainly thanks to the failings of the teams below them.
Harry Kane is out, and Tottenham have been beaten five times in their last six games in all, nine times in their last 10 matches away from home.
The exception in that run came on their last trip to the continent, however, against Borussia Dortmund in the last 16, and now they arrive in Amsterdam with Son available after sitting out the first leg due to suspension.
Jan Vertonghen, who began his professional career in Amsterdam before joining Tottenham in 2012, is in line to return too after coming off with a head knock in the first leg.
"You wouldn't believe at the start of the season that Tottenham would be in the last week of the season with the possibility of being in the final of the Champions League and to be in the top four," Pochettino insisted. "Both are real, but this is not the moment to talk."
Spurs' status as one of the Premier League's top six clubs gives them a considerable financial advantage over Ajax, but they cannot match their opponents - four times European champions - when it comes to history.
The club of Cruyff and so many other great names are in sight of a first Champions League final since 1996 and remain in with a chance of a treble, something they last did in 1972 when the man after whom their stadium is now named was starring on the pitch.

TREBLE DREAM

Erik ten Hag's team secured the first leg at the weekend when they beat Willem II 4-0 in the Dutch Cup final, and they are top of the league in the Netherlands with two matches left.
They are aiming to carry on an incredible European run that began in the second qualifying round against Sturm Graz on July 25.
"You don't expect at the beginning of the season to be in this position. I am very proud and happy to be here during this special period," said Daley Blind, almost echoing Pochettino's own remarks.
Blind, who returned to the club from Manchester United just before the campaign began, admitted that celebrations after the Cup final were "a bit timid" due to the proximity to this match.
Ajax are now hoping they don't live to regret not scoring more than once in London.
"Our defensive organisation was excellent," pointed out Ten Hag. "In the final third we didn't play all that well but the players' mindset was to defend our 1-0 lead."
If they can finish the job on Wednesday, they will be the ones to advance to the final in Madrid on June 1.

SINGAPORE - Liverpool fans will have an extra reason to celebrate if the Reds win the Champions League final on Sunday morning (June 2, Singapore time), with at least two food and beverage outlets offering free food to ardent supporters.
Should Jurgen Klopp's men beat Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham Hotspur at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, Gayatri Restaurant will give a free curry fish head to every fan who wears a Liverpool jersey and visits any of its three branches on Sunday, while Ah Lim Jalan Tua Kong Mee Pok is offering a free bowl of bak chor mee from 7am to 9pm on June 3.
Gayatri Restaurant owner Shanmugam Ganesan, who has been a Liverpool fan for the past 47 years, said the main reason for the promotion is to celebrate his team's victory if they emerge victorious.
"I love the team and, every time they win, I feel very happy. About a month ago, I went to Anfield to watch them play as I thought I should visit at least once in my lifetime," said the 57-year-old, who believe Liverpool have experience on their side in Sunday's final.
"I think Liverpool have the edge and they are more stable with their players being injury-free. Of course, some might also say Spurs are in the final for the first time and will be going all out, so it'll be a very hard-fought final."
The free curry fish head offer is only for dine-in orders at their outlets at Race Course Road, Telok Ayer Street and East Coast Road. There is no limit to the number of customers who can redeem it.
After the Reds' spectacular comeback against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final on May 7, Springleaf Prata Place and Casuarina Curry both offered free pratas at their outlets to customers who showed up the next day in a Liverpool jersey.

R. Sasikumar, who runs sports marketing firm Red Card Global, believes this recent trend is a smart move on the part of these outlets, but warned of the possibility of trademark infringement.
Noting that he had seen one restaurant use the Liverpool logo on their Facebook page, the 44-year-old said: "If you become an official sponsor or partner of the club, you pay millions of dollars. Riding the wave and leveraging on the buzz and using people's interests to sell their products, it's a bit of fun and quite savvy.
"But you've got to be careful - there's a fine line between (reaching out to Liverpool fans) and actually using their trademark."
The recent emergence of F&B outlets offering football-related giveaways could partly also be due to Liverpool's popularity here, he added.
"Given that we are a small country and the Premier League being popular and, on the back of what Liverpool have been doing last season, it works," said Sasikumar.
"It's the right time, right place and right team - all of that comes together. If one of the top two or three clubs keep doing that, I think more people will jump on the gravy train."

Football: Vertonghen shines as Tottenham beat Dortmund 3-0

LONDON (REUTERS) - Defender Jan Vertonghen scored once and set up another goal for Son Heung-min as Tottenham Hotspur beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday (Feb 13) to give them the clear edge following the first leg of their last 16 Champions League tie.
The Belgian notched his first goal in the Champions League with a well-timed volley in the 83rd minute after he had set up forward Son for a 47th minute lead. Substitute Fernando Llorente grabbed their third in the 86th.
That was Son's ninth goal against Dortmund in 11 matches, with the South Korean, who played in the Bundesliga from 2010-15, having also scored twice in the competition's group stage last season.
The Bundesliga leaders, who were eliminated from the German Cup last week, were nowhere to be seen in the second half, with speedy teenager Jadon Sancho given no space to operate after the break. The return leg is on March 5.
Before Wednesday, Tottenham, playing without injured captain Harry Kane and Dele Alli, had never won a home match in the knockout stage of the competition and Lucas Moura came close with a fine shot in the seventh minute.
Dortmund, who were themselves missing injured captain Marco Reus and top striker Paco Alcacer, gradually took control and had the better chances in the first half with Christian Pulisic firing onto keeper Hugo Lloris and the Frenchman saving a point-blank header from Dan-Axel Zagadou.
But the hosts changed the course of the game two minutes after the restart, pouncing on a defensive error and with Vertonghen whipping in a cross for Son to tap in.
Dortmund, who had conceded just two goals in the group stage, tried to recover but found no way past the disciplined Tottenham backline.
Vertonghen then timed his run to perfection in the 83rd to kill off the game and Llorente gave them a big advantage for the second leg.

Football: Sterling captains England as Kane, Henderson left out

GUIMARAES, Portugal (REUTERS) - Harry Kane was left on the bench for England's Nations League semi-final against the Netherlands on Thursday (June 6) with none of the players from Champions League finalists Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur starting for Gareth Southgate's side.
In Kane's absence, Manchester City's Raheem Sterling was named captain in what will be his 50th appearance for the national team.
Southgate selected an attacking trio of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Sterling while West Ham United's 20-year-old Declan Rice starts in midfield.
