Football: British rescuers end search for missing plane carrying soccer player Sala

LONDON (REUTERS) - Rescuers ended their search on Thursday (Jan 24) for the plane carrying Premier League soccer player Emiliano Sala, which disappeared over the English Channel three days ago, after saying there was little chance anyone aboard had survived.
Sala, Cardiff City's new signing, and the plane's pilot, David Ibbotson, have been missing since Monday night.
Rescuers have scoured over 4,000 sq km but have found no trace of the aircraft or those on board.
"We reviewed all the information available to us, as well as knowing what emergency equipment was on board, and have taken the difficult decision to end the search," Guernsey Harbour Master Captain David Barker said in a statement.
"Next of kin have been informed of this development, and my thoughts go out to the family of the pilot and passenger at this most difficult of times."
Cardiff owner Vincent Tan said in a statement that everyone at the club would continue to pray for Sala, Ibbotson and their families.
"Monday evening's news shook everyone at Cardiff City FC to the core," he added.
"We were looking forward to providing Emiliano with the next step in his life and career.
"Those who met Emiliano described a good-natured and humble young man who was eager to impress in the Premier League.
"The response from the football community has been truly touching and we place on record our sincere thanks to those who have sent messages of support."

After the plane disappeared, a recording emerged of a fearful voice message Sala apparently sent in which he expressed concern about the single-engine Piper Malibu aircraft he was flying in.
The 28-year-old Argentina-born forward was en route from Nantes in western France to make his debut for Welsh team Cardiff City.
Barker said the search had involved 80 hours combined flying time by three planes and five helicopters, with two lifeboats and other ships in the area also helping.
"Although we are no longer actively searching, the incident remains open and we will be broadcasting to all vessels and aircraft in the area to keep a look out for any trace of the aircraft. This will continue indefinitely," he said.

VALENCIA (REUTERS) - Real Madrid's Gareth Bale came off the bench and coolly converted a penalty to secure a 2-1 win at Levante in La Liga on Sunday (Feb 24) as the European champions rode their luck to stay within nine points of leaders Barcelona.
Real came under heavy pressure early on but Karim Benzema gave them the lead towards the end of the first half from the spot after a penalty was awarded for handball following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.
Levante, who pulled off a shock 2-1 win over Real at the Santiago Bernabeu earlier this season, deservedly drew level on the hour mark with a sliding finish from Roger Marti, who had struck the woodwork twice before the interval.
Real struggled to impose themselves on the game but were awarded another hotly-contested penalty following a VAR review when Casemiro went down in the box following light contact.
Wales forward Bale, who had only replaced Benzema minutes earlier, deceived Levante keeper Aitor Fernandez with an ice-cool finish from the spot but barely celebrated the goal, brushing away team mates who tried to congratulate him.
Real had defender Nacho Fernandez sent off for a second booking late in the game, although the Spaniard's first yellow card meant he was already ruled out of next Saturday's 'Clasico' at home to Barcelona in the league.
Madrid are third in the standings on 48 points, two behind Atletico Madrid who beat Villarreal 2-0 earlier on Sunday and still adrift of Barca, who won 4-2 at Sevilla on Saturday.

LONDON • Despite claiming that Tottenham's English Premier League title hopes are over, Mauricio Pochettino believes his players will still be motivated to give their best shot when they host Arsenal at Wembley today.
Spurs were dreaming of a title challenge just a week ago, but back-to-back defeats by Burnley and Chelsea mean that even their top-four spot is now in danger.
But the Tottenham manager remained hopeful for today's north London derby, saying: "Of course to motivate for this type of game is an easy job.
"We don't need to motivate the players. We know very well what it means to play against Arsenal.
"We know that we're going to be very motivated and we'll have a team that is very motivated, too."
Third-placed Spurs are on 60 points and their lead over the Gunners is down to just four, with Manchester United and Chelsea also close behind in the race for the final two Champions League places next season.

"Of course it's going to be tough, They have very good players, they are doing a very good job," the Argentinian added.
"But my team is doing a fantastic job in the last five years. I can talk from where we have arrived. We are changing that perception that Tottenham were a little bit soft."
Following today's match, Tottenham still have to travel to title-chasing Liverpool and Manchester City in the final nine games of the league campaign.
Much of the damage done in the past week will be forgotten should Spurs bounce back in the derby and open up what ought to be a decisive seven-point advantage over Arsenal.
For Unai Emery, a thrilling 4-2 win over Tottenham in early December was the highlight of his first season as Arsenal boss.
However, in contrast to their stunning form at the Emirates, Arsenal have won just once on the road in the Premier League in their past seven games and that was at rock-bottom Huddersfield.
Emery's embarrassment of riches going forward was demonstrated in a 5-1 thrashing of Bournemouth on Wednesday.
However, the Spaniard has struggled to find the right balance as Arsenal have not kept a clean sheet away from home in the Premier League all season.
There would be no better way for him to win over a still-unconvinced fan base than by curing his side's travel sickness today and delivering another blow to Spurs and solidifying Arsenal's own position.
Emery, though, knows it is no easy task to play at Wembley.
"There was a 10-point difference two weeks ago and now it's four points. We are playing for three points and more," he said at his press conference yesterday.
"But each derby is different. Playing home and away can be very different. Matches like tomorrow the players know it's important first to get three points and because it is special for the supporters.
"We must play with confidence and keep our minds free."

Two games, two wins, 10 goals scored.
The 2019 Singapore Premier League season may only be in its second round this week, but Tampines Rovers are proving to be worthy contenders for their first domestic league title since 2013.
This, after the Stags thrashed Home United 5-1 last night at Our Tampines Hub, just five days after walloping Hougang United by the same score in their first match of the season.
In just two games, Tampines have now scored almost a quarter of the 43 goals they netted over 24 games last season.
Tampines coach Gavin Lee said: "I think we did well; two wins out of two games is a good start, but we have to be cautious now because every team that play us will be coming for us.
"I think that the result really flattered us, but the message today was simple: we had to work hard, we had to match them for their desire and determination.

"But I think towards the end of the game, we should've controlled the game a lot better.
"We gave away too much and the boys know that."
Both sides attacked from the get-go, with the home side missing an opportunity to take the lead early when Taufik Suparno missed from the penalty spot in the 14th minute.
As in the Hougang match, goals by Irwan Shah and Jordan Webb bookended the eastern giants' scoring on home ground last night, with Yasir Hanapi, Taufik and captain Shahdan Sulaiman adding their names to the score sheet.
Adam Swandi gave the Protectors a consolation goal in the 57th minute to prevent a total whitewash. Despite the loss, Home coach Saswadimata Dasuki was still proud of his team for putting up a good fight.
He said: "Before the penalty, I thought the boys were controlling (Tampines) well by minimising their space and time.
"After the second goal, I thought that we could still get back into the game, but a mistake by my defender caused us to be 3-0 down and there was a mountain for us to climb against a very good team.
"I hope the boys don't give up because it's just two games. I hope they keep on going."
Despite sweeping aside Hougang and Home who were touted as title contenders, Lee was not keen to engage in early title talk.
He said: "There are 22 more games to go and anything can happen. It's a long season and we're not thinking about the end of the season. We're just taking one game at a time. Consistency is our target."

Manchester City v Liverpool: Talking points

Manchester City v Liverpool: Talking points

SANE TURNS THE CORNER

A season that started with Leroy Sane's future at Manchester City in doubt is no longer a tale of woe for the winger. He underlined his vast potential with the winner that kept the champions' title hopes alive.
He started City's first three league games this season on the bench amid claims Pep Guardiola was concerned by the youngster's lack of focus in training.
But the 22-year-old German gradually regained his manager's trust and scored four times in five games in October. Since then, Sane has been much closer to the buccaneering force who played a major role in their title success last season and City have opened talks over an extension to a contract that expires in 2021.

A VERY CLOSE SHAVE

Despite dominating the early stages, City were just 1.12cm away from suffering a potentially game-changing blow as John Stones atoned for a mistake in dramatic fashion.
The City defender made a panicked clearance and the ball cannoned off goalkeeper Ederson towards his own net. It looked certain to be a farcical own goal but Stones scrambled back to hook clear of an onrushing Mohamed Salah at point-blank range.
Liverpool claimed it had gone in, but goal-line technology showed that a tiny portion of the ball, just 1.12cm according to Premier League statistics, had not crossed the line.

TOO SOON TO CELEBRATE

When a video emerged of Jurgen Klopp ushering in the new year with some dubious dance moves at a party earlier this week, it was jokingly suggested the Liverpool boss was already preparing for his club's title celebrations.
After all, it was 242 days since Liverpool last lost a Premier League game and the Reds arrived at the Etihad boasting a nine-game winning run in the league.
But Liverpool, who were last crowned champions in 1990, are haunted by the ghosts of the past when Steven Gerrard's slip let City steal the title from them and once again they were punished for failing to seize the moment.
