Match points: Arsenal v Manchester United

Key battles

Matteo Guendouzi v Paul Pogba
Guendouzi may have edged ahead of Lucas Torreira for a spot in Unai Emery's strongest side but, with the Uruguayan suspended, he will have to start. His energy could make him well suited to the task of tracking his fellow Frenchman Pogba, but United's game plan on their last visit also revolved around Jesse Lingard, who is out injured.
Alexandre Lacazette v Chris Smalling
Smalling produced arguably the performance of his life in Paris on Wednesday. After acquitting himself well against one French striker in Kylian Mbappe, he faces another in Lacazette, who should be fresher after being suspended in the Europa League. Lacazette's finishing is such that he has 12 goals from just 25 shots on target.
Laurent Koscielny v Romelu Lukaku
Lukaku has become the first United player since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2006 to register three successive braces. He mustered another kind of double on United's last trip to Arsenal: he set up two goals. He is relishing partnering Marcus Rashford, but Koscielny combined well with Sokratis Papastathopoulos against Tottenham.

New Singapore football coach Tatsuma Yoshida and players 'must be on same page'

On Monday, newly appointed Singapore football coach Tatsuma Yoshida conducts his first training session with the national team.
It is ostensibly to prepare for the upcoming friendlies with Solomon Islands and Myanmar, but also serves as a crucial introduction for the Japanese and his players.
This is important, noted former Singapore international R. Sasikumar, as both parties must be on the same page, with the same goals, for the Lions to succeed.
Sasikumar, who runs sports marketing firm Red Card Global, added: "It is important to communicate clearly his ideas, whether in person or through a translator."
With the Lions in a state of flux following the retirement of defender Baihakki Khaizan and the gradual phasing out of older players such as Shahril Ishak and Khairul Amri, Sasikumar felt Yoshida's main challenge is ensuring a smooth transition.
He said: "It is good he has some local knowledge of Singapore football, having played for Jurong FC before, but it will be interesting to see how he recruits the Young Lions for the senior squad and develops them."
With the Republic 160th in the Fifa rankings and sixth in South-east Asia behind Vietnam (98th), Thailand (114th), the Philippines (124th), Myanmar (140th), and Indonesia (159th), Sasikumar also felt that the first marker of success will be "being competitive in Asean region", before taking it further.

  • LIONS SQUAD FOR UPCOMING FRIENDLIES

  • GOALKEEPERS

    Hassan Sunny, Izwan Mahbud

  • DEFENDERS

Amirul Adli, Fadli Kamis, Faritz Hameed, Irwan Shah, Safuwan Baharudin, Shakir Hamzah

  • MIDFIELDERS

Adam Swandi, Hariss Harun, Huzaifah Aziz, M. Anumanthan, Shahdan Sulaiman, Yasir Hanapi, Zulfahmi Arifin

  • FORWARDS

Faris Ramli, Gabriel Quak, Khairul Amri

Former national coach and technical director P.N. Sivaji agreed: "Fans in Singapore will want the new coach to produce results quickly. By results, I mean at least performances to indicate they can compete with Asean kingpins."
He added: "I think while Fandi Ahmad and Nazri Nasir were in charge of the national team on a temporary basis, they have shown we have a decent crop of players.
"Even if they are not quite ready to knock Vietnam and Thailand off their perch, at least we have a steady group that have room for improvement and he has to get the best out of them as a unit."
While Yoshida's resume - his stints as head coach of Japanese top-flight clubs were mostly mediocre - may seem underwhelming to some in the fraternity, Sasikumar was cautiously optimistic.
Citing Vietnam's success with the unheralded South Korean coach Park Hang-seo, he said: "Park was relatively unknown until his first senior national team job with Vietnam in 2017, and their amazing run in which he led them to the AFF Suzuki Cup title last year and the quarter-finals of this year's Asian Cup.
"He also took them to the AFC Under-23 Championship final and the Asian Games semi-finals last year.
"So it's been done before with a (fairly untested) Asian coach in this region and something the new Singapore coach can learn from."

Football: Derby shocker with Villa's Grealish attacked by Birmingham fan but he gets last laugh with winner

LONDON (AFP) - Aston Villa's Jack Grealish was punched by a pitch-invading Birmingham fan in a shocking incident during Sunday's (March 10) English Championship clash but the midfielder had the last laugh as he scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over their bitter rivals.
Grealish was in the Birmingham penalty area in the 10th minute when a man ran onto the field and threw a punch from behind at the Villa captain.
The blow caught Grealish on the side of the head and sent him sprawling to the turf.
The intruder was quickly restrained by a steward, as Villa players including Tammy Abraham and Glenn Whelan rushed to Grealish's defence.
After the fan had been shoved over, he was eventually led away by police, defiantly blowing kisses to the crowd.
A visibly furious Grealish was helped to his feet and was able to continue playing once order was restored at Birmingham's St Andrew's stadium.
Grealish produced the perfect response to the assault in the 70th minute.
Taking possession 20 yards from goal, he advanced into the Birmingham penalty area before drilling a low shot into the far corner to seal Villa’s league double over their hated neighbours.
In a fittingly dramatic gesture, Grealish jumped into the stand to celebrate with the Villa fans behind the goal and was booked as a result.
"Following the incident on the pitch involving an attack on an Aston Villa player; a man has been arrested and en route to a custody block," West Midlands Police tweeted.
Former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville called for Birmingham to be docked points over the attack.
"The club are going have to take a huge punishment for this to act as a deterrent in the future. A Points deduction or Empty stadium for 10 games!" he tweeted.
Former England striker Gary Lineker branded the attack "abhorrent", adding on Twitter: "Well done Jack Grealish for keeping his cool".
There is a long history of animosity between Birmingham and Villa supporters, with outbreaks of serious violence in the streets marring many of the "second city" derby encounters.
There was fighting between rival gangs before Sunday's match, with police having to hold back fans while at least one man was seen being treated by paramedics after suffering a head wound.

Worrying trend

Fanning the flames further, Grealish is a boyhood Villa fan and once turned down a chance to join Birmingham on loan when he was a youngster, reportedly saying: "I'm not going there".
In 2002, a Birmingham fan was jailed for four months after running onto the pitch at St Andrew's to taunt then Villa goalkeeper Peter Enckelman, who had just conceded a bizarre own goal when he let a back-pass roll under his foot into the net.
The supporter made an obscene gesture in Enckelman's face and slapped his cheek.
Adding to the tense nature of Sunday's derby, both teams are fighting to earn a place in the Championship play-offs for promotion to the English Premier League, with Villa now a point ahead of Birmingham.
The attack on Grealish continued a worrying trend of supporters targeting players this season.
On Friday in Scotland, Rangers captain James Tavernier was confronted by a Hibernian fan who had jumped out of the home stands at Easter Road.
The supporter kicked the ball away from Tavernier before the pair engaged in a bout of shoving.
Police later confirmed that a 21-year-old man had been arrested.

That incident came six days after a glass bottle was thrown from the same section of Hibernian's stadium, as Celtic's Scott Sinclair prepared to take a corner.
In December, Manchester City's Raheem Sterling was subjected to alleged racist abuse from Chelsea supporters at Stamford Bridge.
Stoke's former Scotland midfielder Charlie Adam tweeted: "Twice in three days we've seen players attacked by supporters, what is going on?
"Football needs to stamp this out quickly. Only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt."

Football: Even if they come on for just five minutes, I trust the player will give 100 per cent, says Nazri Nasir

Football: Even if they come on for just five minutes, I trust the player will give 100 per cent, says Nazri Nasir

SINGAPORE - There is no secret in motivating footballers. Just one simple word - trust.
It captures Nazri Nasir's management philosophy and what he tried to instil during his short stint in charge of Singapore during March's AirMarine Cup in Malaysia.
The former national captain said: "I fully believe in them. I told them when you're selected to be part of this team, it's because I trust you.
"When they're called on in the game, even if it's just five minutes, I trust that they will give their 100 per cent and when they're given a chance, they will do well."
The Lions, their morale low after failing to qualify for the semi-finals of last November's AFF Suzuki Cup, responded with some creditable performances at the friendly quadrangular tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
They beat the hosts 1-0 and held Oman to a 1-1 draw before losing 5-4 on penalties.
Nazri, 48, who was recently appointed assistant to new national coach Tatsuma Yoshida, said: "They responded to me very well and I always try to win the players' trust, that's the most important thing and it showed during the AirMarine Cup.
"I hope they can continue the momentum and that's where I come in also to motivate the players.
"That was a good experience for me to get to know the players better. Now, I can help him (Yoshida) get to know them as well by sharing their mentality, strengths and weaknesses.
"With his coaching ideas and me as I can interact with players easily and understand them better, these will blend together to build a good chemistry in the team."

He and Yoshida face their first test as a partnership in the coming days. The Republic, ranked 160th, face the Solomon Islands (world No. 139) and Myanmar (140) on Saturday (June 8) and next Tuesday (June 11).
The upcoming friendlies at the National Stadium were arranged to help Singapore gain crucial Fifa ranking points for a potentially better draw in July for the World Cup qualifiers.
Singapore captain Hariss Harun said Nazri, who skippered the Lions to victory at the 1998 AFF Championship, is an important presence in the national set-up.
Hariss noted:"His role will be very crucial as the middleman between players and coaches. He also has a lot of experience to impart and with Yoshida's time in Japan with various clubs (Kashiwa Reysol, Albirex Niigata and Ventforet Kofu), we need to adapt as fast as we can.
"Our results at the AirMarine Cup gave us a lot of confidence so we just have to try to continue that momentum. We have a new coach too so the boys are eager to show what we have and I hope this will translate to a good performance in the coming games."
After Nazri retired in 2008, he joined his former club Tampines Rovers as general manager and was later an assistant coach for the now-defunct LionsXII and Young Lions.
He said: "Yoshida brings different ideas and playing styles. He's very detailed and requires high intensity.
"He wants to bring Singapore to a higher level and with his guidance and my local experience, I'm sure we can help the team improve. "

Football: Injured Ronaldo expects to return in one or two weeks

LISBON (REUTERS) - Cristiano Ronaldo does not think the injury which forced him out of Portugal's match against Serbia on Monday (March 25) is overly serious and he told reporters he expects to return to action in one or two weeks.
Ronaldo went off in the first half of the Euro 2020 qualifier with an apparent hamstring injury. The match ended 1-1.
"I'll know more in 24 or 48 hours," he told reporters.
"It happens, it's football. If you go out in the rain you get wet... I'm calm, I'll be back in one or two weeks." His club Juventus later said in a statement that the 34-year-old had undergone exams in Portugal which showed "an apparent minor injury to his right thigh flexors".
"His condition will be monitored and will be subjected to new investigations to define the resumption of competitive activity," it said.
A long absence would be a blow to Juve, who signed Ronaldo last year to boost their chances of winning the Champions League. Juventus travel to face Ajax Amsterdam in their quarter-final first leg on April 10 with the return six days later.
Both Ronaldo and Portugal coach Fernando Santos said the referee had apologised to them for not awarding them a penalty for handball in the second half.

The referee initially gave the spot kick but then changed his mind. Video assistant referees (VAR) are not used in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.
"It was very clear, the referee should have given it," said Ronaldo.
"The linesman was 40 metres away so it seems a bit strange."
Santos said: "We saw the incident in the dressing room afterwards and neither we nor he had any doubt - it was a penalty... He apologised."

Pogba spot kicks help United 'get away with it'

Pogba spot kicks help United 'get away with it'

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted Manchester United "got away with it" after West Ham, 2-1 losers to a pair of Paul Pogba penalties, were on the end of a series of questionable officiating decisions.
United remained outside the Premier League top four ahead of tomorrow's Champions League clash with Barcelona, who left Lionel Messi at home amid 10 changes in a 0-0 draw at bottom side Huesca with the Spanish title nearly in the bag.
Since Solskjaer was appointed permanently last month, they have struggled to find the form that fuelled an 11-match unbeaten run when he took over on an interim basis in December.
They saw off Watford, their only other success in six games since the remarkable comeback win over Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16. But they lost successive matches to Wolverhampton and Barcelona, 1-0, in the quarter-final first leg at home without a shot on target.
Worryingly, at Old Trafford on Saturday, they also had less possession (45 per cent) and fewer shots (two versus four) than the Hammers in a laboured display.
"We got away with it. Sometimes you get more than you deserve and today is one of them," said Solskjaer. "Watford was one of them. We were lucky it wasn't Barcelona, but West Ham played well."
They could have been one down early. Replays suggested Felipe Anderson had a goal wrongly chalked off for offside, with Diogo Dalot playing him on before Pogba gave United the lead.
That 19th-minute goal came from a penalty whose award was also questionable, as Juan Mata may have gone down outside the box and Robert Snodgrass' challenge on him may have been fair.
After Felipe Anderson equalised on 49 minutes, United's winner came via Pogba's second penalty 10 minutes from time, following the Frenchman's pass to Anthony Martial, who was then tripped.
West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini suggested Marcus Rashford got a touch on the pass and was offside doing so but replays showed this was not the case.
"A few mistakes but the decisions went for United. Unfortunately for us there were some decisions, very difficult, so I am not complaining about the referee. With VAR, I am sure we would win the game 1-0."
"Felipe Anderson was onside. It was not a penalty from Robert."
Solskjaer said that United would have no chance if they were as flat at Barcelona, who have won 27 of their last 30 Champions League home matches and drawn three. They have never lost to the English side at their Nou Camp ground in Europe's top club competition but the Norwegian is not giving up.
"We know it is going to be a very difficult game but we beat PSG," he said. "It will be a greater achievement if we can manage it against Barcelona. We will go there, why not have a go but we have to be better defensively."
Barca have 74 points with six games left, even as their lead was cut to nine points after Atletico Madrid beat Celta Vigo 2-0.
At Huesca, goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was the only starter at United who remained, as a trio made their LaLiga debuts.
Messi, whose nose was bloodied after being struck in the face by Chris Smalling, did not travel. Ivan Rakitic and Sergio Busquets were also rested while Gerard Pique and Luis Suarez were suspended.
Coach Ernesto Valverde was "happy in general with the game, though we could have been more ambitious in attack".
Arturo Vidal was happy to admit that their minds were more focused on going beyond the last eight in Europe for the first time since 2015.
"The Champions League is what everyone is dreaming about," said the midfielder.
