Alli confident 'strong squad' can end trophy wait
LONDON • Dele Alli has pledged to end Tottenham's 11-year wait for a major trophy as his side head into an explosive League Cup semi-final showdown with Chelsea tonight.
Spurs have not won a major competition since beating the Blues in the 2008 final. They also lost to the same team in the 2015 final.
The four-time Cup winners are still in the Champions League and FA Cup, and also have an outside chance in the Premier League title race. But it is the League Cup that presents their first chance to end the silverware drought.
While the competition is often written off as an after-thought for top clubs, England star Alli is adamant it could be the first major prize for highly regarded manager Mauricio Pochettino, yet to win a trophy in his coaching career with Spurs, Southampton and Espanyol.
"I think every game, every competition, you want to win it," Alli said.
Spurs crushed fourth-tier Tranmere 7-0 in Friday's FA Cup third round using only three first-team regulars, including Alli, in a bid to keep the key men fresh for Chelsea.
Alli expects the plan to pay dividends, saying: "I believe we've got a strong squad.
"Players work hard to make sure we're fully fit and the manager makes changes. I think he's very good at that."
Chelsea, who host the second leg on Jan 22, will give late fitness tests to Olivier Giroud (ankle) and winger Pedro (hamstring).
Manager Maurizio Sarri is unsure whether midfielder Cesc Fabregas has played his last game but he feels the Spaniard must leave for the good of his career.
Fabregas, 31, appeared to say goodbye after Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest, applauding all sides of Stamford Bridge. His contract expires this season, with British media reporting he is close to securing a move to Monaco this month.
"I don't know if he is able to play tomorrow because in the last match he had cramp in the calf so he needs to rest I think," Sarri said yesterday.
"I don't know the decision of the club. In my opinion, he needs to go."

Football: Tributes pour in for Stoke's England World Cup-winning 'keeper Gordon Banks, who dies at 81

LONDON (AFP) - Gordon Banks, the England football team's goalkeeper when they won the 1966 World Cup, has died aged 81, his former club Stoke announced on Tuesday (Feb 12).
His family said the former star, who lost an eye in a car crash in 1972, had died in his sleep.
"It is with great sadness that we announce that Gordon passed away peacefully overnight," they said.
"We are devastated to lose him but we have so many happy memories and could not have been more proud of him."
Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick in the 4-2 win over West Germany in the World Cup final at Wembley, tweeted a fulsome tribute to his former team-mate.
"Very sad to hear the news that Gordon has died. One of the very greatest," tweeted the 77-year-old.
"Thinking especially of Ursula (wife), Julia, Wendy and Robert (children). Sad for football, Stoke City and for England fans. Will be very sadly missed."


Banks, who played in every game of that historic campaign, is probably best known for a wonder save he produced to deny football legend Pele in a 1970 World Cup group match in Mexico.
"Once I got my hand to it I hadn't a clue where it was going," he modestly said afterwards.
Pele - who would go on to lift the trophy - admitted later he had said "gol", so sure was he that the ball was heading into the net. Brazil still won the game 1-0.
However, Banks later recounted that he did not appreciate the remark made by one of his team-mates that day, midfielder Alan Mullery.
"I patted him on his head, and I said 'why didn't you catch it?' and the abuse that came back was unbelievable," said Mullery.
Banks, whose club playing career revolved largely around Stoke and Leicester, is the latest of the 1966 team to die.
Captain Bobby Moore, the baby of the team Alan Ball and Ray Wilson preceded him while several such as Nobby Stiles and Martin Peters suffer from Alzheimer's.
Mullery said Banks was probably the best goalkeeper he had played with or against.
"He was the best at that time. We had some great goalkeepers in those days, and the only person I can think came near was Pat Jennings," said Mullery. "He was absolutely marvellous goalkeeper. He was a likeable man, and when it came to business, he was probably the best there has ever been."

Another former Leicester and England legend Gary Lineker - albeit from a later generation - also tweeted his appreciation of Banks, whose sole trophies at club level were two League Cups, one piece with Stoke and Leicester.
"Oh no. Gordon Banks, an absolute hero of mine, and countless others, has died," tweeted Lineker. "@England's World Cup winner was one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, and such a lovely, lovely man. #RIPGordon."
Stoke City chairman Peter Coates said Banks - who played 250 times for The Potters after he joined from Leicester in 1967 - had not been in good health for several weeks.
"We've been expecting this, he has been (doing) poorly for a number of weeks but it's a very sad day for us, we love him so much," said Coates. "He made his home in Stoke, and was very much part of the fabric of the club. You don't get too many like him, and he was immensely modest for all (his) talent.
"He told me when they walked out at Wembley for the final, and he had goose-bumps, he had never seen anything like it."

(REUTERS) - Arsenal's hopes of a top-four finish in the English Premier League were dented on Sunday (April 7), as Everton captain Phil Jagielka took advantage of an unexpected late recall to score the winner in a dominant 1-0 victory at Goodison Park.
The veteran defender, who was brought into the team for a rare appearance after Michael Keane had to withdraw in the warm-up through illness, scored after 10 minutes to earn his side a well-deserved third-straight league win.
It marked a significant setback for disappointing Arsenal, who remain fourth in the table but missed an opportunity to leap ahead of their third-placed north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Unai Emery's side stay on 63 points, one behind Spurs, level with fifth-placed Chelsea and two clear of Manchester United in an increasingly tight battle for the Champions League berths.
The experienced Jagielka proved Everton's unlikely hero after his late call-up, becoming the oldest goalscorer in the league this season at 36 years 233 days when he poked home his finish after Arsenal failed to clear Lucas Digne's long throw.
The ball had fallen kindly after Dominic Calvert-Lewin got the final touch on to him in the aerial battle, allowing Jagielka to score his first league goal in two years and become Everton’s second-oldest marksman in the Premier League era. 
“I’m not normally a match-winner, full stop,” laughed the former England defender on Sky Sports. “They’re the best goals,the little tap-ins from two or three yards.”
His goal signalled a hungry and aggressive display from Everton who, while moving up to ninth on 46 points, could have won far more convincingly if Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison had converted any of the side’s 23 attempts on goal. 
“We got one goal but could have scored a few more,” added Jagielka. 
He earned special praise from delighted Everton manager Marco Silva, who told the BBC: “He was to start on the bench, but showed how he is a good professional and prepares himself for what the coach and team needs. He is always ready to help the team.”
Arsenal, who have conceded at least one goal in every league away match this season, came closest with one curling second-half effort from Henrikh Mkhitaryan but were outplayed and outfought by Silva’s team.  They had only two attempts on target in the whole match and, with Mesut Ozil failing to offer much inspiration as captain for the day, endured one of their more frustrating lacklustre away days.  
Arsenal’s frustration became obvious when the two managers were involved in a brief confrontation in the second half. 
“The football is emotional. He wants the best for his team, I want the best for mine. At the end we spoke together and everything is normal,” said Silva. 
Arsenal boss Emery felt his team would have to rebound swiftly as they prepared to face Napoli in a Europa League quarter-final first leg on Thursday. 
“It was not a good result today but we are still fourth,” said the Spaniard. “We lost and we need to get up quickly and find the next step.”

LONDON (REUTERS) - Mike Ashley has agreed to sell Newcastle United to Abu Dhabi's billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan for £350 million (S$612 million), the Sun reported late on Sunday (May 26).
The contracts between Ashley and Sheikh Khaled have been signed and submitted to the Premier League, according to the report.
Ashley, who bought a controlling stake in the Premier League club in 2007, has in the past tried to sell the club.
Ashley, who owns British sportswear retailer Sports Direct International Plc said last October that he had not received any acceptable offers for Newcastle, a year after he officially put the club up for sale, but told Sky News in December that talks on a deal had made promising progress.
Any potential buyer of the club must be able to provide transfer funds, he had said at the time.
Sheikh Khaled, the cousin of Manchester City owner and Arab billionaire Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, previously failed in his bid to buy Liverpool Football Club for £2 billion last year, the Daily Mail has previously reported.
Sheikh Khaled is also the founder of Bin Zayed Group, a leading conglomerate with diverse business interests in the local and international markets.

 
Newcastle United, the Premier League and the Bin Zayed Group did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comments.

MADRID (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp laughed off suggestions he is an unlucky manager as he looks to halt an unfortunate run of ending up on the losing side in his last six finals as a coach when he leads Liverpool into Saturday's Champions League decider.
"Since 2012, apart from 2017, I was every year with my team in a final, so we are getting there sometimes with luck in some moments, but most of the time because we had to go there," Klopp told reporters at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, where Liverpool will face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday (June 1).
"I am probably at the moment a world-record holder, in the last seven years at least, in winning semi-finals, but if I wrote a book about that probably nobody would buy it."
This is the seventh final Klopp has taken a team to since leading his brilliant Borussia Dortmund side to a German league and cup double in 2012.
He lost the 2013 Champions League final with Dortmund and the German Cup final in each of the following two campaigns.
Klopp then lost the Europa League and League Cup finals in his first season with Liverpool, before being defeated in the 2018 Champions League final by Real Madrid.
Liverpool also finished second to Manchester City in this season's Premier League despite losing just one game and amassing 97 points. But the German insists it cannot all be about him.

 
"I'm a normal human being, and if I would now sit in a room and think it's all about me, I am the reason, if I would see myself as a loser or whatever, then that would be a problem. But I don't see it like this."
Klopp, 51, added: "The things that happened in the past, for me I still got confidence I can take out of that, and could always, so it's all good.
"Now I understand luck - if you work for it, you have it from time to time, not always... but apart from that, no, it was not an unlucky career and it's not over, I have still a few years!"

Football: Late Iraqi free-kick breaks Vietnamese hearts at Asian Cup

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Ali Adnan swept home a brilliant, last-minute free-kick as former champions Iraq twice hit back to beat Vietnam 3-2 in the Asian Cup on Tuesday (Jan 8).
It was a heart-breaking way for Vietnam to lose in Abu Dhabi, but no more than Iraq deserved for going for the jugular after Humam Tareq had hauled them level on the hour mark.
"The first half was horrible," said Iraq coach Srecko Katanec.
"We showed nothing that we did in training - no power, no personality at all. Maybe it was first-game emotions, the players felt the pressure a little bit."
"I knew it would be a tough game," added the Slovenian.
"But the most important thing was the three points."
Vietnam's Golden Dragons took a shock lead after 24 minutes in the Group D clash in Abu Dhabi, defender Ali Faez panicking under pressure from Nguyen Cong Phuong and clumsily backheeling the ball past goalkeeper Jalal Hassan Hachim.
Iraq, who defied the odds to win an emotional Asian Cup title in 2007, levelled 10 minutes later through striker Mohanad Ali, who profited from a defensive error to rifle home from the edge of the box.
Cong Phuong restored Vietnam's lead three minutes before the break, stabbing in from close range after Nguyen Trong Huang's shot had been parried by Hachim.
But Tareq lashed home a second equaliser following more horrific defending from the Vietnamese, who by that point looked to be running out of steam.

LAZY FOUL


A lazy foul on the edge of the penalty area subsequently presented Adnan with the chance to take all three points and he did not disappoint, curling a left-foot shot into the top corner, prompting several Vietnamese players to slump to the turf in despair.
Iraq join Iran on three points after their bitter rivals thrashed Yemen 5-0 on Monday.
Iraq's circumstances have scarcely improved since thir fairytale success 12 years ago, with security concerns impacting their preparations for tournaments.
But the Lions of Mesopotamia will hope to at least match their run to the Asian Cup semi-finals in Australia four years ago, despite losing several of their top players to retirement.
"If we want to go deep into the tournament we will have to improve," shrugged Katanec.
"But I have a clearer picture now of our overall condition and we will grow into the tournament."
Vietnam coach Park Hang-seo, who steered his side to the southeast Asian title last December, insisted he had no regrets.
"I'm proud of my players," said the South Korean.
"At the end they were exhausted and lost a bit of concentration but we were a little unlucky too."
"We were targeting a point from this game because we play Iran next and obviously they're title favourites," he added.
"It will be very tough from here but we will go again."
