Football: Tunisian club win African title after final abandoned over video assistant referee

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Esperance won the CAF Champions League in Tunisia Saturday (June 1) after Wydad Casablanca refused to continue playing on 60 minutes because VAR was unavailable to judge a disallowed equaliser.
The Tunisian side were leading 1-0 in the second leg of the final and 2-1 overall when play was halted, and after a 90-minute delay the referee awarded the match to the home side.
Tunisian media reported that officials were aware before the match that the VAR (video assistant referee) system was not working, but the players seemingly did not know.
It is the first time in the 55-year history of the elite African club competition that a match in the home-and-away final series has not been completed.
Wydad believed they had levelled on 59 minutes when Walid el Karti headed a cross into the net. TV replays confirmed he was onside, but might have fouled an opponent with his shoulder.
The Moroccan team insisted that the Gambian referee check with VAR, apparently unaware that the often-controversial system was unavailable.
Wydad substitutes and 69-year-old coach Faouzi Benzarti joined in the protests and police foiled an attempted assault by a spectator wearing the red and gold of Esperance.
Plastic bottles containing liquid were also flung toward the Wydad players and coaches as tempers flared.
At one stage, CAF president Ahmad Ahmad and the bosses of Esperance and Wydad spoke on the side of the pitch without succeeding in getting the match restarted.
The Wydad players and coaches eventually went to the changing room and, after a long delay, the referee indicated that Esperance had been awarded the match.
There was widespread criticism of the debacle on social media with many tweets saying that calling off the club showpiece brought shame to African football.

The abandonment occurred just 20 days before an expanded 24-team Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Egypt, with VAR scheduled to be used during the knockout phase.
VAR had played a major role in the first leg of the final in Morocco last weekend, with referrals ruling out a goal by Wydad and later appeals for a penalty by the Moroccans.
The Egyptian referee of that match was subsequently banned for six months with CAF saying his performance was "poor".
Three-time former champions Esperance took the lead on 41 minutes when Youcef Belaili curled a shot into the net from the edge of the box at the Stade Olympique.
The Tunisian outfit dominated the opening half and fully deserved to lead at half-time in the 60,000-seater stadium.
But the way Esperance ultimately won the competition for a second successive time took much of the gloss off the achievement.
They are only the fourth club - after Al Ahly of Egypt, TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Enyimba of Nigeria - to achieve back-to-back Champions League triumphs.
And by going through their 2019 CAF campaign unbeaten - equalling the achievement of the 1994 squad - Esperance became the first club to win the competition twice without losing a match.
It was also a special night for 37-year-old coach Moine Chaabani, who became the first from north Africa to win two Champions League finals in a row.
Tunis citizens reacted to the triumph by pouring into the streets and screaming joyfully while cars and motorbikes crisscrossed the capital, honking horns.
Many Esperance supporters flocked to the district where the club was formed 100 years ago in a cafe of the same name.

Football: 4-goal Russia bounce back, Wales edge Slovakia in Euro qualifiers

BERLIN (DPA) - Russia responded to an opening defeat to Belgium by easing to a 4-0 victory over Kazakhstan in Astana in Euro 2020 qualifiers on Sunday (March 24).
Denis Cheryshev scored twice before half-time and laid on the third for captain Artem Dzyuba after the break while Abzal Beysebekov deflected a shot into his own net.
Kazakhstan had started their Euro campaign in Group I on Thursday with a 3-0 defeat of Scotland, who were playing later at San Marino.
World Cup semi-finalists Belgium, who defeated Russia 3-1 on Thursday (March 21), have a late kick-off against Cyprus in Nicosia.
Wales began their campaign in Group E with a 1-0 victory over Slovakia in Cardiff, Daniel James scoring in the fifth minute.
Slovakia had chances towards the end but Euro 2016 semi-finalists Wales, skippered by Gareth Bale after manager Ryan Giggs dropped Ashley Williams, held on for the points.
The defeat for Slovakia followed an opening 2-0 win against Hungary, who were playing World Cup finalists Croatia later in Budapest.
Matches were also scheduled later in Group C, including the Netherlands against Germany, and Group G.

'They're brilliant': Liverpool fans line streets to honour idols

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Under leaden English skies, Liverpool became a carnival of red on Sunday as the football-mad city hailed its heroes for bringing home the Champions League trophy for the first time in 14 years.
"We're just so excited," said Tina Taylor, 51, as she joined tens of thousands of locals thronging the city's streets to watch the team parade Europe's top football prize from an open-top bus.
"It's so uplifting for the city, bringing everybody together," she added, decked out in a red Liverpool shirt and scarf alongside her husband and son, as the team bus neared their vantage point in the suburb of Mossley Hill.
Moments later the double-decker, emblazoned with "Champions of Europe", rolled by with the famous silver trophy being hoisted aloft by bouncing Liverpool players amid red flare smoke, confetti and wild cheers.
The club claimed the European crown for the sixth time Saturday night in Madrid with a 2-0 win over Tottenham in only the second ever all-English final.
It followed an epic season in which Liverpool narrowly missed out on a first league title in three decades, causing agony - now somewhat relieved - for fans impatient to end the long wait.
"What a day - what a weekend! Imagine lifting that cup," said 78-year-old Stan Evans, a lifelong local fan who looked out of a first-floor pub window as star striker player Mohamed Salah held it aloft just below his gaze.
Evans could recall cheering all five of Liverpool's previous European Cup triumphs, starting in 1977, when they beat Borussia Moenchengladbach in the final in Rome.
"This is just as good because I never thought we'd see another one in my lifetime," he added.

'I MIGHT CRY AGAIN'

Celebrations ran late into the night in Liverpool city centre, as ecstatic supporters danced drunkenly in the streets singing a repertoire of the club's anthems.
The morning after, bleary-eyed fans began streaming back onto the streets ahead of the parade, which worked its way slowly towards the city centre.
"I'm ecstatic and hungover at the same time - the best type of hangover," said Peter Broad, 37, a social housing worker and Liverpool native.

"I might cry again," he added, flag in hand.
"It's emotional - it means so much to you just to win. Liverpool's a very European city, it's always been outward-looking," Broad explained.
Thousands of fans lined the roads east of the city centre, while children climbed atop bus stops for a better view, as the bus - preceded by a booming sound stage - made its way.
A jubilant atmosphere rippled through the city, as all manner of Liverpool flags flew from buildings and cars, drivers sounded horns and fans carried everything from banners to balloon replicas of the trophy.
Aleisha Tipton, 23, from nearby Cheshire, staked out a prime spot near the waterfront end-point.
"We don't care about waiting all afternoon to see them," she said of her heroes as light rain started to fall.
"It can rain all day, we don't care!" She was wearing a commemorative scarf from 2005, when Liverpool last won the competition in a memorable come-from-behind victory over AC Milan in Istanbul.
"This time is better for me as I was only nine then."
For her granddad Ken Jones, 79, this Liverpool team is up there with the best he has seen.
"They're brilliant," he said. "I don't think they could replace them with anything better."

Football: Arsenal beaten by BATE in Europa League as Lacazette sent off

PARIS (AFP) - Arsenal face an uphill battle to progress in the Europa League after a 1-0 defeat by BATE Borisov in the last-32 first leg which saw Alexandre Lacazette sent off on Thursday (Feb 14).
Stanislav Dragun put BATE ahead just before the break in Barysaw and Arsenal never threatened an equaliser, with Lacazette's late dismissal also ruling him out of next week's return game at the Emirates.
Unai Emery's side have now won just two of their last nine away matches - last weekend's victory over the Premier League's bottom club Huddersfield and an FA Cup win against third-tier Blackpool.
Arsenal enjoyed plenty of the ball in the opening stages, but it was the hosts who almost grabbed the lead as debutant Nemanja Milic flicked Igor Stasevich's cross onto the outside of the post.
The visitors' best chance in the first half fell to Lacazette, only for the Frenchman to head over when unmarked at the back post.
BATE made him pay when they snatched the advantage on the stroke of half-time as Dragun climbed highest to send a header from Stasevich's free-kick looping into the top corner.
Arsenal were struggling on a difficult pitch in Belarus, and even when Lacazette did find the net just before the hour mark, he was rightly flagged offside.
Emery, who won three consecutive Europa League titles with Sevilla from 2014-2016, threw on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Lucas Torreira and Denis Suarez in an attempt to find a breakthrough.
But Arsenal continued to labour and their night took another turn for the worse as Lacazette was sent off for lashing out at Aleksandar Filipovic with his elbow in the 85th minute.
Elsewhere, Inter Milan claimed a 1-0 win at Rapid Vienna despite Mauro Icardi snubbing the trip after being stripped of the captaincy over a contract row, with Lautaro Martinez scoring the winner from the penalty spot.
Wissam Ben Yedder's 22nd-minute strike helped record five-time winners Sevilla take a large step towards the last 16 with a 1-0 victory over Lazio in Rome, while Benfica backed up their 10-0 weekend thrashing of Nacional by winning 2-1 at Galatasaray.
Hatem Ben Arfa netted a penalty but Rennes twice blew a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Real Betis in France, while Olympiakos were held to a 2-2 home draw by Dynamo Kiev.

Football: Neymar heads to Qatar for medical assessment

PARIS (AFP) - Neymar will travel to Qatar to undergo a "complete assessment" six weeks into his recovery from a fractured right foot, the club said on Thursday (March 8).
The Brazil forward watched on forlornly from the stands at the Parc des Princes as PSG crashed out of the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday to Manchester United on away goals following a 3-1 defeat.
"Neymar Jr will travel to Aspetar (sports clinic) in Qatar for the next 3 days as scheduled in the initial recovery plan," the club wrote on its Twitter account.
"He will undertake a complete assessment after six weeks of his injury. He will be accompanied by a medical team from PSG."
The 27-year-old damaged the fifth metatarsal in his right foot in a French Cup win over Strasbourg on January 23 and was ruled out for 10 weeks.
PSG were hoping he would be healed enough to get back on the pitch in time for a potential Champions League quarter-final in April, but the French side suffered a humiliating exit as United sensationally overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit.

Football: Singapore Under-22s hold group top seeds North Korea to keep AFC Championship hopes alive

SINGAPORE - National Under-23 football coach Fandi Ahmad hailed his side’s 1-1 draw with North Korea in their AFC Under-23 Championship qualifier on Sunday (March 24) as their best performance since he took charge of the team in October 2016.
Ikhsan Fandi scored a superb solo goal within a minute of kick-off, but North Korea equalised six minutes later at the MFF Football Centre in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Singapore are third in Group G on two points from two matches, two points behind North Korea and Hong Kong, who beat hosts Mongolia 1-0 in the other match on Sunday.
The Young Lions  have a chance to top the group and qualify for the tournament finals for the first time if North Korea and Hong Kong  play out a draw in their final game on Tuesday and Fandi’s boys beat Mongolia by more than one goal in a later game.
The 11 group winners and four best runners-up will qualify for the 2020 Under-23 Championship in Thailand in January. The top three finishers in the tournament will qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Fandi told The Straits Times: “I’ve told the boys that miracles do happen, but we have to work to create them, too. All we can do now is work hard and enjoy the ride, and I’m happy to be on this journey with this bunch of players.”
He was delighted by the effort and application his players showed against North Korea, who were ranked ninth out of 44 teams in the qualification tournament – Singapore are ranked 30th.
The 56-year-old’s second son, Ikhsan, had put Singapore in front inside the first minute, latching on to a clever through pass by Hami Syahin and racing down the left flank before squeezing a shot inside the North Korean goalkeeper’s near post.
Ikhsan, 19, said: “After Hami played that pass, I could hear everyone on the bench shouting ‘take him on’ so I just kept running at the defender towards goal, and shot.
“I didn’t even see where the goal or goalkeeper was, my only thought was to get it on target.”
North Korea, however, equalised in the seventh minute through a cool turn and finish by Park Kwang Hun.
But the 2016 Under-23 Championship quarter-finalists were unable to add a second goal as Fandi’s side defended stoutly to deny their opponents clear-cut chances.
“North Korea are a very good team, but our boys battled till the very end, and we survived,” said Fandi.
“The tactical discipline was there, the boys coped very well. Now we look ahead to Mongolia and we will play to win. They are fighters but, tactically and technically, they are not stronger than us.”
Added Ikhsan: “We’ve drawn two games now (after the 1-1 draw with Hong Kong on Friday), and the boys are focused to get the win against Mongolia.
“They’re a good team with some fast and skilful players, but we have that in our team as well.
“We’ve worked so hard (to qualify) and we’re going to try our best and see how things work out.”

Football: FA charges Emery over water bottle kicked into crowd

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association after kicking a water bottle into the crowd during the 1-1 Premier League draw at Brighton on Wednesday (Dec 26).
A Football Association spokesman said on Thursday: "Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been charged following the game against Brighton yesterday (Dec 26, 2018).
"It is alleged his action of kicking a water bottle during the fixture amounts to improper conduct. He has until 6pm (1800 GMT) on Jan 2, 2019 to respond to the charge," the FA spokesman added.
Spanish boss Emery went to speak to the home supporter nearest where the bottle landed immediately after the incident and again at full-time at the Amex Stadium.
Emery, speaking earlier Thursday before the FA's announcement and ahead of Arsenal's trip to league leaders Liverpool this weekend, said he hoped his apology would draw a line under the incident.
"I say yesterday my apologies, I kicked the bottle in frustration but not for the supporter, I kicked for me and it went near to the supporter and I said to them my apologies. There is not another communication.
"I repeat today my apologies for my individual action but I kick the bottle because it is near me, but not because it is my intention."
Emery, while hoping the matter was done and dusted, added he would respect any decision taken by the FA.
"I hope so, yes," he replied when asked whether his apology should close the book on the incident.
