Ready for City aggression

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted he is still the right manager to deliver success at Manchester United despite last Sunday's shambolic 4-0 English Premier League defeat at Everton.
United produced their worst display under Solskjaer, who has overseen 25 matches in all competitions, initially as interim manager and then the permanent boss.
The Norwegian subsequently apologised to fans for his players' poor performance.
The loss was a huge blow to United's top-four hopes and left the team in sixth place on 64 points, two behind Arsenal who travel to Wolves today.
United will host rivals Manchester City at the same time and, when asked at a pre-match conference yesterday if he is the best person for United, Solskjaer said: "I would like to say yes, but it's not down to me to say that.
"I'm confident in my team and myself to take this challenge on. It's a big challenge and, when I came in here, I said I'm going to enjoy every single second.
"I don't like losing, but it's a challenge when you go through bad results. This is the way we're gonna do it and plan ahead."
Midfielder Paul Pogba had told Sky Sports that the way United played at Goodison Park was "disrespectful" to themselves, the club and the fans and that the team are looking to give everything on the pitch today.
However, City are on a 10-match winning streak in the league and Solskjaer has warned his men to expect an aggressive battle.
"We got to be ready for their pressing so we've got to defend well, got to be ready for aggression, they will snap at your heels and kick you," the 46-year-old said.
"There will be fouls, absolutely no doubt about it and, when you watch those games, they commit so many players forward.

"They won't allow us easy counter-attacking.
"This is the best game we could ask for with players hurt, as they definitely were.
"We had a meeting after the (Everton) game and all the players were definitely disappointed and really hurt by that performance.
"The City game is the perfect one, there's no hiding place on the pitch and the fans will back you if you give that effort."

Second-placed City, on 86 points, will reclaim top spot from leaders Liverpool (88) with a win today.
James Milner, who has played for three of United's fiercest rivals - Leeds, City and now Liverpool - in the course of a 17-year career, has said he will become a United fan for the first time today.
The 33-year-old explained that he would be delighted if United did Liverpool a favour by winning.
"First time in my life," he said when asked about his support for United this week.
"But I won't be watching. It's a bit of a waste of energy, willing the ball in the other goal."
Liverpool have never won the Premier League title and were last crowned champions of England when they lifted the old First Division trophy back in 1990.
Defender Virgil van Dijk, in his second season with Liverpool, also believes that United will put in a big performance and at the same time aid Liverpool's ambitions.
"United need to do themselves a favour. Everton is not easy to beat at home, but 4-0 is a big loss," the Dutchman said.
"We have no influence on that (the Manchester derby), but United are still playing for Champions League football and they need to get a (good) result."

Football: Saudi Arabia show title credentials with 4-0 win over 10-man North Korea in Asian Cup opener

DUBAI (AFP) - Three-time winners Saudi Arabia laid down a marker as they ruthlessly dismissed 10-man North Korea at the Asian Cup on Tuesday (Jan 8).
The Saudis, humbled at last year's World Cup in Russia, looked far more at home in neighbouring United Arab Emirates as they tore North Korea apart 4-0 in their opening Group E game.
It was a performance that tagged Saudi Arabia as one of the teams to beat at the continental showpiece along with Iran, who thrashed Yemen 5-0 on Monday.
The Green Falcons attacked relentlessly in the opening stages and Hatan Bahbri put them in front in the 28th minute, turning defender Ri Il Jin inside out and firing into the far corner.
They were 2-0 up nine minutes later when Hussain Almoqahwi's free kick glanced off the outstretched boot of Mohammed Al Fatil and past Ri Myong Guk in the North Korean goal.
North Korea already had a mountain to climb, but their plight worsened just before half-time when Han Kwang Song received his second yellow card for bringing down Almoqahwi.
Salem Al Dawsari made it 3-0 with a smart finish on 69 minutes before Fahad Al Muwallad bagged a soft fourth goal against an exhausted Korean defence three minutes from time.

Family mourns as body in Channel wreckage identified as that of footballer Emiliano Sala

PORTLAND, Britain (AFP) - Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala’s family grieved on Friday (Feb 8) after British authorities formally identified his body as the one recovered from the wreckage of a plane that went down in the Channel more than two weeks ago.
“We can now begin to mourn our son and our brother,” the Cardiff City striker’s family said in a statement.
“We would like to thank you for all of your signs of affection and support in the most painful time of our life.
“To see everyone doing everything possible to join us in the search has been a precious help to us.”
Argentine footballing idols Diego Maradona and Gabriel Batistuta also paid tribute to 28-year-old Sala.
His French former club, Nantes, said it was retiring Sala’s number nine jersey. All matches in France’s top two divisions this weekend will be preceded by a minute of applause for him.
The light aircraft carrying Sala from Nantes to his new club disappeared near the British island of Guernsey on Jan 21.
The only other person on board was the aircraft’s 59-year-old pilot David Ibbotson, who has not been found.
The player’s body was first spotted by British rescuers using a remotely operated underwater vehicle on Sunday, close to where the plane vanished from radar.
Investigators recovered the body on Wednesday and transported it to the southern English coast. It was taken to Bournemouth where it was formally identified.
Investigators said they were abandoning plans to lift the plane wreckage out of the water due to bad weather.

‘REST IN PEACE, WARRIOR’

Sala’s disappearance sparked an outpouring of grief and a flood of cash to support a private hunt for the plane when the official search was initially called off.
“I am very sorry about this sad news. Many of us kept a glimmer of hope for you, Emiliano,” football icon Maradona said on Instagram, following the identification of the body.
“What sadness, this is the worst news. Rest in peace warrior,” tweeted former Argentina striker Batistuta.
Manchester City and current Argentina striker Sergio Aguero also expressed his condolences.
The country’s President Mauricio Macri also mourned the “painful news”.
“We are with you,” he said.

The small Argentine town of Progreso, where the footballer lived for most of his childhood, was also in mourning.
“Since we found out, it’s all anyone can talk about,” said local restaurant owner Oscar Heymo, a friend of Sala’s father Horacio. “He was very much loved and admired by all.”
In Cardiff, the club’s manager Neil Warnock said Southampton and Cardiff City players would wear black armbands in their English Premier League match on Saturday and a minute’s silence would be observed before kick-off.
“When something like this happens it brings all the football family together,” he said. “It’s a loss to everyone in football.”
Sala’s sister Romina wrote on her Instagram account: “Your soul in my soul will shine forever”.

CROWDFUNDED SEARCH

The plane, a Piper PA-46 Malibu, vanished from radar around 20km north of Guernsey.
The discovery of two seat cushions on the French coast last week revealed that the plane had broken apart.
Initial search operations were suspended in the days after it went missing but a crowdfunding effort supported by thousands of donations, including from football stars such as Argentina superstar Lionel Messi, helped launch a private search.
Without the fund-raising effort “I don’t think anybody would have searched for the plane,” shipwreck hunter David Mearns, who was hired by the family, told AFP.
The plane wreckage was spotted by Mearns’ ship. Britain’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) then co-ordinated the recovery.
The AAIB said that extensive video footage captured of the sunken wreckage is expected to “provide valuable evidence for our safety investigation”.
It said it intended to publish an interim report on the accident later this month.
Sala was the most expensive signing in Cardiff’s history.
Nantes have consulted lawyers to explore legal options to ensure Cardiff pay the transfer fee for Sala, a source close to the French club said on Wednesday.
According to the source, the first instalment of the 17-million-euro ($19.3 million) deal has yet to be paid, despite the transfer being finalised before the accident.
Nantes coach Vahid Halilhodzic said Friday: “To talk about money in these moments is disgusting.”
He described the news that Sala’s body had been formally identified as “awful” and “unfair”.
“We had always maintained hope but we knew in the end that it was slim, almost an illusion,” said the 66-year-old, who wept as he spoke to reporters.

Football: Bayern Munich win Bundesliga title for seventh successive season

MUNICH (REUTERS) - Bayern Munich won a record-extending seventh consecutive Bundesliga title on Saturday (May 18) after crushing Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 to finish two points ahead of rivals Borussia Dortmund.
The Bavarians, who can secure a domestic double if they beat RB Leipzig in the German Cup final on May 25, have now won the German league title a record 29 times.
“It was no easy season by any means. What the team managed to achieve after a lot of criticism is significant. That is why I would like to thank them all,” Bayern coach Niko Kovac told Sky after his team topped the standings with 78 points.
With veterans Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben scoring in their last league game for the club and the Frenchman becoming the first player to win nine Bundesliga titles, victory was also sweet for Kovac.
He spent much of his first season at Bayern under pressure while his future in Munich, despite a contract to 2021, is still in doubt.
“I am convinced that it will continue (here),” Kovac said. “I have first-hand information. Now I hope that we can also win the Cup and celebrate the double.”
With two points separating Bayern and Dortmund going into the final matchday, the Bavarians were in no mood for any mishaps considering they had squandered a chance to wrap up the title last week when they drew at RB Leipzig.
In a dominant first half they went ahead with Kingsley Coman after four minutes and missed a bagful of chances to score again.
Frankfurt briefly levelled when Sebastien Haller stabbed in on the rebound in the 50th but their hopes of a top-four finish lasted only minutes with David Alaba and Renato Sanches netting for the hosts in the 53rd and 58th.
Ribery, who joined back in 2007, and Robben, who arrived two years later, then came on as substitutes and scored Bayern’s fourth and fifth goals for a perfect farewell.
Ribery overtook Bayern greats Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Oliver Kahn and Mehmet Scholl among other, who have eight league crowns to their names.
Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski was crowned the league’s top scorer for the fourth time with 22 goals.
Dortmund finished on 76 points after beating Borussia Moenchengladbach 2-0. RB Leipzig, third, and fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen will join them in next season’s Champions League.
Gladbach, VfL Wolfsburg and Frankfurt will compete in the Europa League.

PARIS (AFP) - Belgium hold on to top spot in the latest Fifa world football rankings released on Thursday (April 4) while England are on the rise, snatching fourth place from World Cup finalists Croatia.
The top three positions are unchanged with World Cup winners France in second spot ahead of Brazil, in third.
England move up one place on the strength of convincing Euro 2020 qualifier wins against the Czech Republic and Montenegro last month while Croatia, who reached the 2018 World Cup final before losing to France, retreat one place to fifth.
Germany, rebuilding following their humiliating exit from the 2018 World Cup in the group phase, are also moving up.
They rise three places to 13th on the back of their victory over the Netherlands in the Euro qualifiers last month.
Austria slid 11 places to 33rd, the biggest drop in the rankings, after Euro qualifier defeats by Poland and Israel in March.
Uruguay, Portugal, Switzerland, Spain and Denmark make up the rest of the top 10.
Singapore gained five places to 160th - their best position since 2017 - as other teams around them fell in the rankings.
Iran rose a spot to 21st and are still the strongest Asian side, followed by Japan (26th) and South Korea (37th).
The Lions remained sixth among Asean countries, behind Vietnam (98th), Thailand (114th), the Philippines (124th), Myanmar (140th)and Indonesia (159th).

Fekir's quality the difference

Fekir's quality the difference

KIEV • Nabil Fekir put on a captain's display to fire Lyon into the Champions League last 16 for the first time in seven years after bagging the crucial equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.
The French forward curled in a superb left-footed strike into the top corner in the 65th minute to cancel out Junior Moraes' 22nd-minute opener for Shakhtar, who had to play the match at the Olympic Stadium some 700km from Donetsk after martial law was declared in Ukraine's border regions amid tensions with Russia.
Lyon needed to avoid defeat by Shakhtar to progress from Group F with Manchester City, and a fifth successive draw in the competition achieved that aim.
Nabil, a former Liverpool target, played down his goal and instead deflected praise to his "heroic" teammates, with the match played in driving snow in Kiev.
"We knew it wouldn't be easy here, especially with the snow. We persisted," the 25-year-old told RMC Sport. "We conceded when we were playing well, but we kept going. Even if I scored the goal, I think the whole team were heroic and showed up well.
"We hadn't qualified for the last 16 for quite some time and now we'll wait for the draw. I hope we come up against a good club and play good games."
Lyon coach Bruno Genesio praised his team's efforts in the difficult conditions.

  • Defeats Lyon suffered as they completed their Champions League group unbeaten (one win, five draws).

"I'm very proud of the players because we came here to play and didn't come away from home to play for a draw," he told RMC Sport. "I'm really pleased that Nabil scored the goal as people have been questioning him of late."
It had looked like Lyon were destined to be knocked out in freezing Kiev after missing many chances before the crucial leveller from Fekir, whose future is uncertain following interest from English clubs.
"We did everything we could to keep hold of the lead, we couldn't do it... The individual quality of Fekir made the difference," said Shakhtar coach Paulo Fonseca.
In the other match, City survived a sloppy start to secure top spot in Group F by coming from behind to beat Hoffenheim 2-1 thanks to Leroy Sane's double.
Andrej Kramaric's penalty put the German side in front on 16 minutes as another much-changed City side struggled to get up to speed.
However, Pep Guardiola's men drew level just before the break courtesy of a brilliant Sane free kick. The German winger then secured victory by converting Raheem Sterling's pass on the hour mark.
"We started flat because this team are so demanding in terms of how they attack the space, their physicality, they are stronger than us," said Guardiola.
"After that, we created an incredible amount of chances, but the result is good. We are in the best 16, now we are going to see the draw and especially try to arrive in the right moment."
City could face Atletico Madrid, Schalke, Ajax or Roma in Monday's draw.

Football: Ajax stun Ronaldo's Juventus to reach Champions League semis

TURIN, ITALY (AFP) - Ajax stunned Juventus to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 1997 as Matthijs de Ligt's thumping second-half header secured a 2-1 second-leg victory in the last eight in Turin on Tuesday (April 16).
Cristiano Ronaldo, bidding for his sixth Champions League title, scored a 28th-minute header to put Juve ahead after a 1-1 first-leg draw, but Donny van de Beek levelled for Ajax before half-time.
Teenage centre-back De Ligt struck midway through the second period, though, to seal a 3-2 aggregate win and set up a last-four clash with either Manchester City or Tottenham.
The young Dutch side had already eliminated three-time defending champions Real Madrid en route to the quarters, overturning a 2-1 home defeat against the Spanish side with a memorable 4-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Juventus had been looking to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the third time in the past five seasons.
But Ronaldo, who scored an away goal last week with a diving header in Amsterdam, was Juve's only weapon against the impressive Dutch side.
The 34-year-old was signed for 100 million euros (S$153 million) last summer from Real Madrid in a bid to win the European trophy for the first time since 1996, when they beat Ajax in the final.
Massimiliano Allegri had been forced to reshuffle his side because of injuries, with Paulo Dybala returning in place of the injured Mario Mandzukic, while captain Giorgio Chiellini was also sidelined.
Ajax's defence took a hit when Noussair Mazraoui, who had replaced the suspended Nicolas Tagliafico, limped off on 11 minutes with an ankle injury, with Daley Sinkgraven coming on.
Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana dived to keep out a scorching Dybala half-volley in the 20th minute.

Ronaldo leaves Onana no chance

But Ronaldo latched onto a Miralem Pjanic corner with a downward header that left Onana without no chance.
It was the Portugal star's 126th Champions League goal and sixth of this campaign, having now scored in his past six European games against Ajax, netting nine goals in total.
But Van de Beek soon silenced the cheers of the home crowd when he controlled a wayward Hakim Ziyech shot six minutes later, rolling the ball past Szczesny to cancel out Juventus' away goal and make it 2-2 on aggregate.
Teenage striker Moise Kean replaced Dybala after the break, but it was the Dutch who turned on the style, with only Szczesny's reflexes keeping Juventus in the tie.
The Polish keeper denied Ziyech from close range with one hand, and minutes later tipped Van de Beek's curling effort over the bar.
The Juventus back-line struggled with the pace of the Dutch team with Pjanic doing well to deny Ziyech a tap-in.
But Erik ten Hag's side's incessant pressure paid off with 19-year-old skipper De Ligt towering above Alex Sandro and Daniele Rugani to head home Lasse Schone's corner on 67 minutes.
Ziyech looked as if he had fired a third past Szczesny, but his goal was ruled offside after a VAR check.
And the Dutch visitors held on, with Ronaldo unable to make a difference after his incredible hat-trick had pulled Juventus into the quarter-finals in the last-16 win over Atletico Madrid.
Four-time winners Ajax won their third consecutive title in 1973 at the expense of Juventus, and last lifted the trophy in 1995, with their last semi-final appearances ending in defeat by Juve 22 years ago.

Football: Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets apologises to fans for exit, admits Liverpool 'were better'

LONDON (REUTERS) - Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets apologised to the club's fans after his side were sent tumbling out of the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday (May 7), losing 4-0 to a rampant Liverpool side for a remarkable 4-3 aggregate defeat.
It is the second year in a row Barca have thrown away a three-goal lead from the first leg to exit the competition, having been knocked out in the quarter-finals by Roma last season following a 3-0 surrender in the Italian capital.
"They were better than us, they went all out to win the game from the start and we really struggled with their pressure especially at the start of both halves," a despondent Busquets told reporters.
"I can't say anything else, all I can do is say sorry to our supporters because after last year in Rome, to go out like this after such a good result in the first leg is very tough, there's little else to say."
Barca had looked on course to reach the final for the first time since 2015 after Lionel Messi inspired them to a 3-0 win in the first leg, but they were overwhelmed by Liverpool's pressure and went behind in the seventh minute to Divock Origi's strike.
Busquets said his side were powerless to cope with Liverpool's pressing game.
"Once they scored and they pressed us high, it was very difficult. I think we had the chance to score the goal that we needed, but it wasn't to be," the midfielder said.

"When you face a team like this which presses you very high up the pitch and you don't make the most of second balls, they just keep pushing further forward and, with this atmosphere, it was very difficult."
Substitute Georginio Wijnaldum scored twice in the space of two minutes early in the second half to level the tie on aggregate.
Origi then put Liverpool ahead in the tie for the first time thanks to some quick thinking from Trent Alexander-Arnold from a corner which caught Barca unawares.
"The fourth goal was a mistake from everyone as we were all taken by surprise. They were more clever than us to take the corner quickly and then they played by themselves," Busquets added.
"If we'd have scored, it would have changed everything, we had the chances to do it, now it's very difficult to think of things to say."
