Football: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives stars 'licence to express', says Dwight Yorke

Football: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives stars 'licence to express', says Dwight Yorke

From the combative Roy Keane to the glamorous David Beckham and the trickery of George Best, Manchester United's heroes have all come with standout traits.
But breaking the mould is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the modest Norwegian who is doing wonders at Old Trafford in an unflashy manner, without donning a cape nor being a force of personality, according to former teammate Dwight Yorke.
"Ole's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet in football. He doesn't give you any drama, he just gets on with his job, he's totally professional in what he does," the 47-year-old ex-Trinidad and Tobago international striker said yesterday in reply to The Straits Times' question on whether Solskjaer's managerial brilliance was evident during his playing days.
"I just didn't see him at this level.
"Like everything else, you need a little luck and fortune and he got that. You got to grasp these opportunities. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him."
Yorke was speaking on the sidelines at the launch of this year's International Champions Cup (ICC) Singapore at the Incubator, near the Padang.
On July 20, the Red Devils will take on Inter Milan and a day later, Juventus will meet Tottenham Hotspur.
British media has reported that Solskjaer is set for a permanent deal at Old Trafford this week and Yorke certainly believes the former striker is the right man to take United forward.

He said: "He has done a remarkable job, there is no question about that. The doubters who think that he wasn't capable of doing a job can pretty much eat their words now.
"May he continue to take the team forward. He's looking good, he's got the players playing with the passion and desire that we expect of a Man United player. That will be the case going forward."
Since Solskjaer took over on Dec 19 after Jose Mourinho's sacking, not only had he restored the team's competitive edge and playing style, he had also done so while smashing records.
He had won 14 out of 19 games, became the first United manager to win his first eight matches, surpassing Matt Busby's five, won a club record of nine consecutive away games and, by dumping Paris Saint-Germain out of the Champions League last 16, they became the first team in the tournament's history to advance after losing the first leg at home by two goals or more.
The key to the Red Devils' surge in form has been the caretaker's perceptive man-management skills, said Yorke.
He added: "I always think we have exceptional young players but these young players were not given the licence to express themselves, and expression is a word you associate a lot with Man United.
"When you just look at the talent that we have, nothing has changed.
"Our attackers (Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial) are as good as any other in the Premier League.
"It's about expressing themselves and exposing their talent. They have managed to do that under Ole."
Come July 20, Singapore fans will get the chance to watch the Red Devils express themselves, and fittingly, hear the classic chant "ole, ole" reverberate in the National Stadium.

Football: Injury, suspensions, rape accusation - Brazil star Neymar's troubled year

PARIS (AFP) - A reoccurrence of an injury, two separate suspensions for insulting a referee and hitting a fan, losing Brazil's captaincy and now an accusation of rape, the world's most expensive footballer had a season to forget for club and country, on and off the field.
Here, AFP reflects on Neymar's difficult season starting with the World Cup in Brazil which could end up with a Copa America title on home soil:

1. Back for Brazil

After more than three months sidelined with a foot problem, his 69th-minute goal guides Brazil to a 2-0 World Cup warm-up friendly victory over eventual champions Croatia on June 3.

2. 'Pathetic diving'

Despite scoring once and claiming an assist as the Selecao qualified for the last 16, his World Cup group stage is marred by his "pathetic" diving as former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel told Russian broadcaster RT.

3. Bows out to boos

Brazil are knocked out of the World Cup in the quarter-finals by Belgium on July 6. Neymar is the victim of boos from a home crowd watching on a big screen in Rio every time he rolls on the ground, becoming an Internet joke for his theatrical efforts.

4. Depression

"I wouldn't go as far as to say I didn't want to play again but, I didn't want to see a ball, or to see any more football played," the 27-year-old told AFP on July 22 after the disappointment in Russia.

5. 'Sensational'

He scores a hat-trick in a 6-1 thumping of Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League group stage two months into the club season on Oct 3 which is described as 'sensational' by head coach Thomas Tuchel.

6. Ballon d'Or blip

He fails to make the top 10 of the shortlist for the first time since 2013, finishing in 12th place as Croatia's World Cup winning-midfielder Luka Modric takes the award in a ceremony held in the Brazilians's adopted home city Paris on Dec 3.

7. Same foot, same injury

With less than half an hour to play and Paris Saint-Germain leading Strasbourg 1-0 on Jan 23 in the second round of the French Cup, he limps off the Parc de Princes field with a similar foot injury to the one he suffered 13 months earlier. His return date is set for the Champions League quarter-finals but the Parisians have to face a resurgent Manchester United with new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the last 16 before then.

8. Controversial Carnival

Despite still recovering from the metatarsal problem, he is filmed and photographed dancing at both Salvador and Rio carnivals in early March.

9. Referee rage

Forced to watch in the the stands as PSG are knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester United on March 6, he tells officials to "Go f*** yourselves" on Instagram afterwards.
He adds: "It's a disgrace. They get four guys who don't understand football to watch a slow-motion replay in front of the TV."

10. Tax probe

Newspaper El Mundo report in March that Spanish tax authorities are investigating the bonus he earned when he extended his Barcelona contract in 2017.
Officials are looking into whether the Brazilian paid tax related to his extra payments and his record transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, the daily paper said.

11. Three-match ban

Six weeks after his referee rant on social media, Neymar is handed a three-match suspension by Uefa for his insults which rule him out of PSG's opening fixtures in next season's European campaign.

12. Fanfare

Two days later, PSG are beaten on penalties in the French Cup final by Rennes on April 28. He scores his side's second goal but hits a supporter as he collects his runners-up medal at the Stade de France.

13. 'The rebellious teenager'

The Brazilian press pounce on his Cup final misdemeanour, branding him a "coward" and a "rebellious teenager". PSG's Tuchel adds salt to the wound by saying: "I don't like it. You can't do that, you just can't do that."

14. Suspension No. 2

He is given another ban for three games, with a further two games suspended for lashing out at the spectator in the stands after the shock defeat by Rennes.

15. Shuns last PSG match

He heads back to Brazil to prepare for the Copa America after he claims to have been given permission to miss the league French champions' final game of the season on May 24. Coach Tuchel denies his reasoning.

16. Captaincy gone

Four days later, Brazil boss Tite takes the skipper's armband away from the 96-time international and gives it to club team-mate Dani Alves less than three weeks away from the start of the Copa America on home soil.

17. Rape allegation

According to a complaint filed with Sao Paolo police and reported by the UOL and GloboEsporte websites on June 1, he is accused of "using violence to have sex with the victim without her consent."

18. Allegation denied

A day later, he denies raping the woman, who accused him of sexually assaulting her at a Paris hotel, with his father claiming he is the victim of blackmail.
"I am accused of rape, it's a big word, it's very strong, but that is what has happened," Neymar said in a seven-minute video posted on Instagram.
Neymar, 27, then shows what he says is a long series of WhatsApp messages with the woman, including topless photographs of her in bed.

Juve, Ronaldo to avoid the US amid rape probe

Juve, Ronaldo to avoid the US amid rape probe

NEW YORK • Organisers of the International Champions Cup (ICC) - a high-profile summer tournament for the world's biggest football clubs - have decided to keep Juventus and their star Cristiano Ronaldo away from the United States this year, eliminating the risk of the Portuguese being detained by authorities as part of a rape investigation in Las Vegas.
While the bulk of the games of the annual tournament will take place in the US, Juventus will most likely take part in the Asian legs in China and Singapore, joined by Premier League teams Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, is playing in his first Italian Serie A season after joining Juventus from Real Madrid for more than US$114 million (S$155 million) last July.
Two months after his transfer, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said it had reopened an investigation into accusations by an American woman Kathryn Mayorga, who claimed Ronaldo raped her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009 and later paid her US$375,000 for her silence.
Ronaldo labelled it "fake news" and, at one point, his lawyers threatened to sue German magazine Der Spiegel who was the first to publish Mayorga's accusations.
It had obtained confidential documents related to the case, and the purported payment by Ronaldo to settle it, from whistleblower platform Football Leaks.
Juventus, who stood behind their star, have a multi-year agreement to play in the ICC, which is organised by New York-based Relevent Sports. Ronaldo's legal troubles played a role in shaping plans for Juventus' participation, according to people familiar with this summer's schedule, which will be released next week.
A spokesman for Juventus said "going east" to Asia was normal after spending recent pre-seasons in the US.
While pre-season tours are not seen as serious competition, they are vital for teams' preparations before the new season, and Juventus would have drawn unwanted scrutiny had it travelled to the US without Ronaldo.
Ronaldo, now 34, was playing for United when he met Mayorga, now 35, at a Las Vegas nightclub in 2009, just before his record-breaking transfer to Real.
She claimed Ronaldo invited her and others to his suite in the early hours of June 13, 2009 and he sexually assaulted her.
Ronaldo's lawyers have questioned the authenticity of some of the documents published by Der Spiegel, but have not denied that Ronaldo and Mayorga had a sexual encounter, which they contend was consensual.

Football: Diego Maradona recovering in Argentinian hospital after surgery for stomach bleeding

BUENOS AIRES (REUTERS) - Argentina's World Cup-winning captain Diego Maradona was recovering in hospital on Saturday (Jan 12) after successfully undergoing a routine operation for stomach bleeding, his lawyer said.
The 58-year old former Boca Juniors and Napoli player discovered the problem in early January during a check-up at a hospital in Olivos, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.
The operation, to stem bleeding caused by a hernia, was not complicated but aimed to resolve what one source told Reuters were "inconveniences" caused by the issue.
"Diego Maradona's surgical procedure is over," his lawyer Matias Morla said on Twitter. "Thank God everything went perfectly."
Maradona has suffered frequent periods in hospital over the years, often due to the extravagant lifestyle that helped make him one of the most admired players of the 20th century. He last fell ill at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he fainted in an executive box at the Argentina-Nigeria group-stage game.
Maradona was taken to hospital in 2004 with severe heart and respiratory problems linked to cocaine use. He later underwent drug rehabilitation in Cuba and Argentina before a stomach-stapling operation in 2005 helped him lose weight.
In 2007, he checked himself into a clinic in Buenos Aires to help him overcome alcohol-abuse problems. In recent months he has walked with the aid of crutches due to problems with his knees.
Doctors discovered the bleeding shortly before Maradona was due to fly to Mexico, where he is coach of second-division side Dorados de Sinaloa.
He would return to lead the club for a second season as soon as his recuperation was complete, the lawyer said. "Now we wait for the recovery so Diego can return to work as soon as possible," he added.

Football: Dinnage turns her back on Premier League chief exec role

LONDON (AFP) - Susanna Dinnage has shocked English football by deciding she no longer wants to be the chief executive of the Premier League despite previously accepting the post.
Dinnage, a television executive, was announced as the successor to the long-serving Richard Scudamore in November, with her appointment hailed as a major step forward for women in sports administration.
It was planned that Dinnage, currently the global president of Discovery's Animal Planet brand, would take over from Scudamore, in charge for 19 years, early in 2019.
Quite why she has rejected the high-profile position remains unclear, with a Premier League statement issued Sunday simply saying: "Despite her commitment to the Premier League in early November, Susanna Dinnage has now advised the nominations committee that she will not be taking up the position of chief executive."
This was a far cry from Dinnage's comments following the initial announcement of her appointment last month, when she said: "With the support of clubs and the team, I look forward to extending the success of the League for many years to come.
When Scudamore took over as chief executive in 1999, the Premier League's domestic television rights deal was worth around £670 million (S$1160 million).
The latest deal for rights between 2019 and 2022 sold for more than £4.5 billion.

While the vast majority of that money still comes from television giants Sky and BT, it also includes the sale of 20 matches to retail giant Amazon's streaming service for the first time.
Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck, Burnley chairman Mike Garlick and Leicester chief executive Susan Whelan led the recruitment process, with Buck describing Dinnage as "the outstanding choice" from a "very strong field" of candidates.
Now, however, the Premier League will have to re-open the search for Scudamore's successor.
"The committee has reconvened its search and is talking to candidates," the Premier League statement issued Sunday also said.
"There will be no further comment until an appointment is made."
