Football: Liverpool's Lovren unlikely to face Bayern, says Klopp

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp concedes he faces a selection dilemma as centre back Dejan Lovren is unlikely to feature against Bayern Munich in Tuesday's (Feb 19) Champions League last 16 fixture at Anfield.
Lovren is still recovering from a hamstring injury sustained against Wolverhampton Wanderers last month and the Croatia defender did not travel with the rest of the squad to the club's warm-weather training camp in Marbella this week.
"I don't want to rule it out but I cannot really plan with it," Klopp told the club's website.
"He is not here for good reasons, because he cannot be part of training. We are back on Friday. Then from Saturday on, Dejan is back at Melwood and we will see."
First-choice centre back Joe Gomez is out of action having undergone surgery on a fractured leg, with no timescale put on his return.
With Virgil van Dijk suspended for the first leg encounter against the German champions, Klopp may consider slotting in Brazil midfielder Fabinho alongside Joel Matip at the heart of the defence.
"Of course, we have to prepare it differently. If Dejan gives a sign on Monday - 'I feel brilliant' - then we'd have to think anew," Klopp added.
"But in the moment we prepare the game and in this preparation Dejan is not involved. We have to find other solutions."

'Serene' Quagliarella becomes Italy's oldest scorer at 36

'Serene' Quagliarella becomes Italy's oldest scorer at 36

PARMA • Fabio Quagliarella attributed his new-found inner peace, following years of being harassed by a stalker, to his stunning form for club and country after the 36-year-old became the oldest player to score for Italy on Tuesday.
The Naples native converted two penalties to make it a total of nine goals for his country in a crushing 6-0 Euro 2020 qualifying win by the Azzurri over Liechtenstein in Parma.
Coach Roberto Mancini put out a mix of youth and experienced heads, which paid off handsomely with the other goals coming from Stefano Sensi, Marco Verratti, Moise Kean and Leonardo Pavoletti.
However, it was Quagliarella who grabbed the headlines after he earned his 26th and 27th caps in the past week - 81/2 years since his last Azzurri appearance - as a reward for scoring 21 goals in 27 Serie A games this term, two more than Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
After overtaking former Roma defender Christian Panucci who was 35 when he netted for Italy in 2008, the Sampdoria striker insisted he "did not feel his age".
"I feel good, I'm very serene. It's a wonderful evening," added Quagliarella, whose stalker was jailed for nearly five years in 2017.
"I want to thank my teammates. After the two goals, they encouraged me to get a third one too, but it didn't happen.
"I thank Jorginho and (Leonardo) Bonucci as they are the penalty takers and they told me to kick (instead). They said: 'The evening is yours, you kick it'. I also thank Mancini who gave me this opportunity."
The Stadio Ennio Tardini crowd was equally thrilled for him, giving him a standing ovation as he left the pitch. He acknowledged it was "a memory I will always cherish".
Calling his call-up "deserved", Mancini said it was also because "he is the Capocannoniere (top scorer) in Serie A this season".
And after his players kept their unbeaten run in the Euro qualifiers going back nearly 13 years, the former Manchester City boss added: "Mission accomplished. The result was obvious, but it was important that we score goals."
Verratti was similarly delighted that despite being "a young squad, we are on the right track".
The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, who notched only his second international goal in six years, said: "After failing to qualify for the World Cup, we wanted to bring enthusiasm back to the group and to the fans.
"It's important for a midfielder to score, but in Paris, I have a deeper role and we have so many strikers there lining up to score. I am happy with the goal, though."

Football: Wilson scores wonder volley as Bournemouth beat West Ham

BOURNEMOUTH, England (REUTERS) - Bournemouth's Callum Wilson smashed home a wonderful second-half volley and his strike partner Joshua King added a second to give their side a much-needed 2-0 home win over West Ham United in their Premier League clash on Saturday (Jan 19).
With Bournemouth desperate to secure their first league victory in almost a month, Artur Boruc started in goal ahead of Asmir Begovic while West Ham left unsettled striker Marko Arnautovic, who has been linked with a big-money move to China, out of their squad.
Both sides struggled to hit the target in the first half, but West Ham's Lukasz Fabianski made two superb saves early in the second and moments later striker Andy Carroll, in for Arnautovic, blazed over from close range as the game opened up.
Wilson gave the home side the lead with a thunderous volley in the 54th minute, catching the ball perfectly and leaving Fabianski rooted to the spot as it flew into the top right-hand corner for his 10th league goal of the season.
With West Ham attacking and Bournemouth content to play on the counter, Wilson almost got a second in the 71st minute but this time his first-time shot came off the foot of the far post and rolled to safety.
The visitors continued to leave space at the back as they desperately chased an equaliser, and King was able to slot the ball into an empty net after a superb counter-attack to secure all three points for Bournemouth.
"I think the big thing for us today was that we got the breaks - Carroll didn't take his chance and Callum scored a goal out of nothing really for us at the other end, and then we defended very well to win," Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe said.
West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini told reporters he was disappointed with the result and that he preferred not to talk about the absent Arnautovic.
"We don't need to talk about a player that was not in the squad. I never complain about players who are not here. We have nine players injured, let's talk about the ones here that we brought to play this game," he told reporters.
"We didn't win, Marko Arnautovic didn't play so we must have other players to step up."

Football: AC Milan may be banned from Europe as Uefa orders another Financial Fair Play probe

LAUSANNE (AFP) - AC Milan risk being excluded from European competition next season after Uefa on Wednesday (April 10) ordered another probe be carried out into the Italian club for breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
European football's governing body said in a statement that Uefa's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) investigatory chamber had decided "to refer the case of AC Milan to the CFCB adjudicatory chamber as the club has failed to comply with the break-even requirement."
The period relates to the 2018-19 season and covering 2016, 2017 and 2018, the statement continued.
"This referral is not related to the decision that was made by the CFCB adjudicatory in December 2018 and covering the 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons," it added.
The Serie A giants are one of several clubs to have been investigated for breaching Uefa's rules, whereby clubs cannot spend more than they generate by their own means.
Milan have fallen foul of the financial rules since they spent €200 million (S$304.8 million) on transfers in the summer of 2017.
The 18-time Italian champions won an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last year, following a Uefa ban from the Europa League.
The club persuaded sport's highest court that their finances would improve under American hedge fund Elliott Management Corporation, who took control last summer when former Chinese owner Li Yonghong forfeited on the loan he had taken to buy the club in 2017 from former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Milan were assessed by Uefa in December, when they were told to break even by 2021 or have their European ban restored.
The club are currently on target to qualify for next season's Champions League, which they have won seven times, as they sit fourth in Serie A with seven games to play.
They failed to progress to the Europa League's knockout rounds but have managed to reach the semi-finals of the Italian Cup.

Football: Italian legend Fabio Cannavaro named new coach of China

Football: Italian legend Fabio Cannavaro named new coach of China

SHANGHAI (AFP) - Italian World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro was named coach of China on Friday (March 15), spearheading the ambitious country's attempts to become a footballing force.
It was not immediately clear if the former Juventus and Real Madrid star will lead the team on a temporary or permanent basis - Chinese media speculated that the upcoming China Cup may amount to a job audition.
The 45-year-old former defender will combine the job with being coach of Chinese Super League (CSL) giants Guangzhou Evergrande, making him one of the most powerful figures in Chinese football history.
He takes the post vacated in January by his mentor and compatriot Marcello Lippi, under whom Cannavaro lifted the World Cup in 2006.
The 70-year-old Lippi will be a consultant under the new coaching set-up named for next week's China Cup, the Chinese Football Association (CFA) said.
"The association has carefully made this decision based on comprehensive research of his experience and technical and tactical style, familiarity with Chinese players and other factors," the CFA said.
Cannavaro's first match in charge of the national side will be next Thursday, when the hosts play Thailand in the China Cup, which also involves Uruguay and Uzbekistan.
Cannavaro carries the hopes of a nation that has grand plans but little in the way of footballing success or pedigree, having qualified for the World Cup only once, in 2002.
Xi Jinping, China's football-mad president, has vowed to make the country of 1.4 billion people a heavyweight in the sport and wants to host a World Cup one day.
But China are a lowly 72nd in the Fifa rankings, sandwiched between Macedonia and El Salvador, underlining the scale of the task facing Cannavaro.
The Italian knows Chinese football well, having coached Tianjin Quanjian in 2016-2017, before taking the Evergrande job in November 2017.
However, he failed to guide Evergrande to an eighth successive CSL title last season.
And he inherits a China squad who were beaten 3-0 by Iran in the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup at the start of the year and who have little in the way of world-class talent.
Five members of Lippi's Asian Cup squad were from Evergrande and the CFA has decided that Cannavaro's familiarity with them can help improve the national team.
There are reservations, however, about Cannavaro's pedigree.
While a decorated player, his only notable achievement as a coach was getting Tianjin promoted to the CSL and then securing Asian Champions League football for them for the first time.
After Evergrande were beaten 3-1 by unfancied South Koreans Daegu in the AFC Champions League on Tuesday, the Oriental Sports Daily asked: "With the current record of Cannavaro, can Chinese fans trust him?"
Lippi, who quit after the Asian Cup, was widely praised for his spell in charge, despite the exit to Iran and a lack of goals.
There is a general feeling among fans and media that China simply do not have the players to do much better.
Lippi won 12 of his 31 matches in charge.

Football: 'We never give up', says Son, as he hails gritty Spurs

LONDON (AFP) - Son Heung-Min saluted Tottenham's fighting spirit as they shrugged off Harry Kane's injury blow to beat Manchester City 1-0 in the first leg of their all-English Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday (April 9).
Son was Tottenham's hero as he netted a cool winner late in the second half to give his side a slender advantage to protect in next week's second leg in Manchester.
It was an impressive display of resilience from Mauricio Pochettino's men after star striker Kane limped off with his latest ankle problem early in the second half.
Hugo Lloris also deserved plaudits for saving Sergio Aguero's first half penalty, laying the foundations for Son's 78th minute strike and inspiring the South Korean to hail their togetherness.
"Not just me but as a team, we never give up for 90 minutes. We fight," Son said.
"It was a very difficult game and in the end, we were more clinical than them." Son had scored the first goal in Tottenham's new ground in their Premier League win over Crystal Palace last week.
Six days later, he was once again the toast of the 62,062 crowd.

"I like this stadium, it is amazing to play here, I am grateful for the opportunity to play at this stadium," Son said.
While Tottenham have control of the tie, Son warned that they will need another herculean effort to knock out City at the Etihad Stadium on April 17.
"It will be very tough, but we performed well, we fight well," he said.
"We should just enjoy like we did today and fight altogether."

SAO PAULO (REUTERS) - Brazilian soccer great Pele had a successful operation to remove a kidney stone on Saturday (April 13), doctors in Sao Paulo said.
Pele had the surgery at the Israelite Albert Einstein hospital.
"The procedure was a success and the patient is back in his room," a brief statement from doctors said.
Considered by many the game's finest player and the only man to have won three World Cups, Pele had also been admitted to hospital in France last week after suffering a fever following an event in the city with French World Cup-winner Kylian Mbappe.
He was soon released but his doctors in Brazil decided to admit him again when he returned home on Tuesday.
The 78-year-old former Santos and New York Cosmos player has suffered from kidney and prostate problems and also had hip replacement surgery in recent years.

Eleven stays afloat in Britain

Eleven stays afloat in Britain

LONDON • Eleven Sports, the self-styled "Netflix of sport", has saved its operations in the fiercely competitive Britain and Ireland markets from closure after reaching deals to offload the rights to Italy's Serie A and continue coverage of Spain's LaLiga.
In December, it emerged that the streaming service, which is thought to have attracted 50,000 subscriptions since its August launch, was unable to attract enough subscribers.
The company, which stopped its pay-TV operations in Singapore and became unavailable on Singtel TV from August last year, attempted to renegotiate rights deals at a much cheaper rate to try and avoid pulling the plug.
It has now concluded talks with IMG, which acts as the agent for Serie A rights, with the Britain and Ireland rights to move to Premier Sports from next month until 2021.
Premier Sports also picked up the rights to the Dutch Eredivisie and Chinese Super League from Eleven.
Eleven has also concluded a new agreement with LaLiga, giving it temporary breathing space to keep broadcasting matches until the end of the season. In the summer, it will have to negotiate another deal.
"The strategic direction we have chosen allows us to focus on LaLiga, which not only drives real value for us in the UK and Ireland but is also a property which we continue to have a valued partnership with in five markets globally," said a spokesman for Eleven Sports, which is controlled by Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani.
The Italian businessman said last December that Eleven could not rely on Internet subscribers alone to make its British venture work and is working out distribution deals for his channel.
Eleven said that as a result of the cutback in sports content, existing and new subscribers will see the price of its monthly pass reduced from £5.99 (S$11) to £4.99 from next month.
Last November, it struck a deal with Scottish broadcaster STV to show two live LaLiga and Serie A games a week through its online streaming service. Last October, it was forced to stop its controversial practice of broadcasting European games on Saturday afternoons after pressure from football stakeholders.
Eleven, which had outbid Sky and BT, Britain's two largest sports broadcasters, for the rights that the two companies had previously owned, said that despite the setbacks it is still looking for new sports rights deals.
Endeavour, the Hollywood talent agency which owns Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the increasingly popular mixed martial arts competition, and IMG hold a minority stake in Eleven Sports UK & Ireland. Eleven, which also operates in markets including Poland and Portugal, is controlled via the holding company Aser, which in turn is controlled by Radrizzani.
Late last year, UFC opted to move back to previous rights holder BT with a new broadcast deal.

Qatar in talks to buy a stake in Leeds
LONDON • Qatar held advanced discussions to buy a stake in storied English Championship football team Leeds United on Monday, according to two people with direct knowledge of the discussions.
The gas-rich Gulf state, which has gained an outsized influence in global football, stunned the sports world when it secured the rights to host the World Cup in 2022.
Since that vote in 2010, it has been among the most consequential footballing nations, buying and investing huge amounts to turn French champions Paris Saint-Germain into a powerhouse team, and also becoming the one of the biggest acquirers of football rights through its beIN Sports network.
The move for Leeds, who missed out on a return to the Premier League after losing their play-off semi-final to Derby last month, would be Qatar's first foray into English football, and most likely will lead to further scrutiny into its affairs at home and abroad.
Human rights groups have drawn attention to the treatment of workers building their World Cup stadiums, while there have been allegations of wrongdoing over the way in which Qatar persuaded Fifa members during the bidding process for the showpiece event.
The talks with Leeds, who were relegated from the top flight in 2004 and have languished in the wilderness since, are at an advanced stage.
They stem from a personal relationship between the club's majority owner, Andrea Radrizzani, and Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the businessman who fronts state-backed Qatar Sports Investments.
A close friend of Qatar Emir Tamim Hamad Al-Thani, he is also the president of PSG and chairman of beIN Sports.
The initial talks with Qatar involve a stake sale, though there could be a provision for a full buyout later on, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions.
An investment in Leeds would be Qatar's third in European football teams - as well as PSG, they own Belgian side Eupen.
